So I've been having a lot of problems since I went paleo... not that I'm blaming the diet, I love it, but I feel like I'm missing something important.
Basically, pre-paleo I've never experienced indigestion. Ever. I went primal a month ago. Yay for feeling better. About a week and a half ago I completely cut out dairy and have not cheated at all.
About 5 days ago I started experiencing this weird feeling, like food is sitting on my stomach for hours... which it probably is! This leads to loss of appetite and nausea. And I started getting diarrhea every other day -_-
I suspect cutting out dairy is what caused my gut flora to go crazy, but I don't know. I took a tablespoon of ACV twice today but still feeling really bad.
My question is what should I add to my diet to aid digestion? And I want something that I can eat normally - not an HCl supplement or taking ACV every day (which is awful). I'm asking about for the long run.
I have had that stomach problem as well. Your right about the HCl being too low. The reasons for it being low generally indicate a damaged stomach lining, usually precipitated by allergies. Animal protein will increase HCl production and provide all the building blocks to heal the gut. A diet focusing on meat and vegetables helped me shake the gastro issues. GL
I have two suggestions and one point to make:
Point) very fatty meals slow your stomach emptying for some reason. I don't cite sources but I'm sure you can find confirmation of this. Since going paleo usually includes "upping your fat" at every turn, this can lead to food sitting longer-than-wanted in your stomach.
Suggestion 1) just separate your high-protein meals from your high-starch/alkaline meals. It's a take on food combining that's been helping me a lot with my own indigestion. I usually eat meaty meals with non-starchy, mostly-green veggies (in moderation) so I can digest properly. I eat things like bananas or potatoes as their own meal. I usually eat sweet/acidic fruit 1-3 hours after a meal, rather than with it. Works...
Suggestion 2) If this all seemed to correlate with dropping the dairy, might I suggest re-introducing it in moderation? Yogurt is good for your digestion, you know. So is kefir. Cheese is well tolerated by most. Some paleos even drink whole milk but I don't. I sometimes eat Haagindaz ice cream though.
jk I think I just figured it out myself.
The problem is low stomach acid... well I now realize I've been eating a lot of alkaline foods like bananas, potatoes, and oranges. I guess I'll be cutting a lot of those out :)
