I used to have small digestion issues when I went from vegan to paleo, so I started taking acidophilus. Recently, though, it stopped working. I'm having small constipation issues again. I eat 200g of fat every day, drink plenty of water, 30-35g fiber daily and drink aloe vera juice.

Is it possible that my probiotic has improved my gut flora and isn't powerful enough anymore? Or is there a more credible explanation?

Ditch the probiotic supps. There is no study showing any effectiveness whatsoever by the way. Eating fermented veg is a much easier, cheaper route to take. Have maybe 4-6 ounces of sauerkraut, kimchi, etc every evening with dinner. Just make it a daily thing. It'll heal you up terrifically. Tremendously effective, really. – ben61820 Jul 12 2011 at 12:47
I'm allergic to mold, would the sauerkraut/kimchi be a bad idea? – Korion Jul 12 2011 at 12:49

uh, there are plenty of studies showing they are effective! Do a search in google scholar. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Jul 12 2011 at 15:12

Lactobacillus acidophilus usually lives in the small intestine, so you might try other bacteria like bifidobacteria that live in the colon. Constipation can indicate too little variety in gut flora.

What kind of fiber? I think the answer lies there. Some types of fiber promote healthy gut flora, some just irritate the gut. It varies for each person. Then there are non-fiber foods that do just as good a job of promoting healthy gut function, like resistant starches which you can get from plantains and some other starchy veg.

I eat mostly broccoli, spinach and green beans as vegetables... – Korion Jul 12 2011 at 12:22
Robb Wolf has discussed some potential gut-irritating lectins in green beans. Either way, I'd just try some different forms of fermentables substrates, such as starches, seaweed, fruit, different green vegetables. I have a doc I'm working on with dif types of fiber but it's not done yet. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Jul 12 2011 at 15:13

Could it be that you need a fresh bottle of probiotics? try getting the same brand or different and see if it works starting with a new batch.....

Are you getting enough magnesium?

Yep, I even started supplementing 300mgx2 magnesium citrate every day. – Korion Jul 12 2011 at 13:40
