So i have found myself craving fruit like crazy since i started the paleo diet. I know it is just because of the sugars in fruit, but i eat quite a bit of fruit every day. So how much is too much??? any suggestions for alternatives to fruit to help ease my sugar cravings???
In general I think 'earn your carbs' is a good philosophy for weight loss...if you're not trying to lose weight then you don't need to be as restrictive with your simple sugars.
If you are trying to lose weight...then I would say no fruits, maybe like berries/avacado. Alternatives for sweet, I've seen xylitol/erythretol(Spell-check) recommended -- although they're still probably not ideal.
Also if you haven't been on the diet for long, you may want to just give it time to work the crap out of your system. If you just keep feeding small amounts of crap back into your diet then you wont get out of the cravings.
How much fruit is a lot? I usually have some with breakfast, lunch and dinner, so that's three servings. That seems to work out pretty well for me. I know for people on a strict weight-loss diet fruit can sabotage goals since modern fruits (even the organic ones) are quite high in sugar and carbs.
It depends on climate and season, what are your potassium and vitamin C needs, and how strong your system is. Mankind has eaten the stuff for millions of years, and they can say what they want, but original wild apples have as much sugar as Kroger apples, and baobab fruit has much more. Right now in the depth of winter I do not like fruit (sugar) very much, in spring I prefer lettuce and asparagus, but in summer and Fall I will eat it with gusto. Fruits will provide also fermentable fibers, which are important for health. Perhaps the ratio sugar/FF is not optimal, compared to root vegetables, but there is sugar also in carrots, sweet potatoes and turnips, and typically less vitamin C. So unless you have high glucose, do what your ancestors did.
As much as you can personally tolerate and as much/as little fits in with your fitness goals.
High protein and fat meals help me stay satiated, and not crave sweets. Also, salty.
I try to think of fruit as paleo dessert, and that generally puts me in the right frame of mind.
Another alternative would be only allowing low sugar fruits in your house-berries are a great example.
Best of luck!
