So it looks like I'm getting the second cold/flu/whatever since I started paleo in Jan 2010. Last summer's bout knocked me on my ass.

What's weird is that even though I'm in the best health of most of my adult life now, I hardly ever got sick. Last time was around 2005, until last summer. Now it's hitting me again, pretty much the same thing: sore throat, coughing up glop, sinus pain.

Not a question I guess, just more of a "WTF?"

I am taking my traditional (to me) remedy of Campari and grapefruit juice (yeah, fructose; I'll live), extra vitamins C & D, and zinc. Maybe I'll force down some coconut oil later. I read about bone broth in the archives but I'm not making that in this heat!

Summer colds are the worst...

how much d are you regularly taking? any sun exposure? There does seem to be a J shaped curve where too much D may inhibit immune function. How are you doing on zinc? A? – Katherine Jul 13 2011 at 0:29
Some sun, but I'm very fair so I don't baste in oil. I take 2000iu of D, no supplemental A. I guess that'd be no extra D because that's what I always take. – 42 Jul 14 2011 at 16:38
Campari & grapefruit juice? That sounds awesome whether sick or not. – misstenacity Jan 4 at 16:19

For the summer colds - i head to my local thai restaurant (which is really like the restaurants in thailand - open kitchen with a gorgeous girl serving and an older lady cooking) I order some Tom Yum Goong(hot and sour prawn) extra spicy. I take it home and eat it all while flowing snot and sneezing - curl up and read a couple of pages of my book and sleep. I'm usually right as rain in the morning - something about all the spice, ginger, garlic and lemongrass just fixes me up - and I get it at a restaurant in the summer because if I cooked it in my house the heat would be unbearable (from simmering everything on the stove). I'm sure they add some not awesome ingredients (probably sugar in their fish sauce) - but it works, so I'll take the trade-off

Hope you feel better soon!!

Yes, Thai penicillin! I usually have done tom yum gai (chicken). Recipe in my blog. I do make it at home because the more heat and humidity the better for healing. I only had three very mild colds this winter. During the previous winter, I had three or four bad flues and some colds. Thank you vitamin D. – Harry Jul 13 2011 at 2:14
If you are having 3-4 colds a winter you must have a shot immune system. – peter Jul 13 2011 at 2:53
Three colds, so mild I hardly noticed them. A big improvement over a lot of colds and flues the year before. At 68, it is going to take a while to get my immune system to where I want it. But I'll get there. – Harry Jul 13 2011 at 4:21
Ah, tom yung... that sounds perfect! – 42 Jul 14 2011 at 16:36

Too bad regarding the bone broth. The one time I was sick while Paleo, I had boe broth for 2 days and it fixed me right up. It's a life saver :)
