My son has been sleeping in total darkness for years. He is 19. He blacks out his windows and he sleeps a solid 8-9hrs per night. We are in the middle of moving him to his own apartment and his window treatment came down just before he went to bed last night. He decided he could deal with it for one night and just fell asleep with his window uncovered. He woke up shortly after daybreak with the most excruciating headache. He is not prone to migraines. Could this be caused by a harsh introduction to light that he is not used to?

Inadequate sleep is a common migraine/headache trigger, and it seems pretty plausible in this case, as sleeping alone in a strange room in conditions which he is unused to/are suboptimal for good sleep all probably exerted an impact (even if he got in his usual 8-9 hours).

Bear in mind that it might not be directly related to sleep/light. It's possible that the emotional and physical upheaval of moving out triggered a stress migraine, which is one of the most types of migraine.

While he waits to get the window treatment fixed, why don't you buy him a good quality eye mask, and see whether or not this is a recurring problem.
