I have posted before about my concern with how much I eat. I apparently need to gain weight if I want to get my period back, but am scared of doing so.
I am a 16 yo female, 5'5.5", about 110lbs. I have had disordered eating habits in the past... I got down to 93lbs and since have gained weight back through whole foods and no medicine. I have tendencies to overeat and am trying so hard to be a mindful eater.
I workout daily, strength train 5x a week, power yoga 2x, HIIT/conditioning 2-3x. I want to gain MUSCLE, strength, but not fat!
Anyways, recently I have been eating more... I usually eat dinner around 3:30-4, and have a snack or so after, around 4:30-5. Usually it is an apple or banana with almond butter, sometimes some paleo coconut flour bread with avocado, leftover meat, ext. I feel like I am eating WAY too much, just ugh. I feel fat and gross and jiggly all day. However, this past week at the gym I reached my PR weights (I have previously hit before but haven't been able to reach again) on deadlift, DB push press, DB chest press, and cable pullback.
However, I have stepped on the scale and it shows I have gained weight. I don't know if it is due to water retention or what, but usually in the morning before I eat I am around 108...now I am around 111.
I included some progress pictures. Left are Feb 2014, Right Nov 2013. I can tell I look more defined... but it is my stomach that bothers me. My legs/arms have never been a problem, I am just concerned with belly fat.
Here is an example of what I ate today, and my workout (today was at home Leg Plyo). Is this too much?
Workout was the "WOW Booty Training" workout from Loving Fit. PaleoHacks wont let me add a link but you can look it up.I added an extra round of "30 reps" and ended with another 80 jump lunges. I also did a 20 minute pilates butt workout. My HRM said I burned about 350 calories.
Breakfast/Post workout: 2 eggs, olive salad mix, salsa
Lunch: 1/2 avocado, raw veggies
Dinner: 1/2 large sweet potato, 1 large chicken breast, veggies saute in coconut oil
Snack: medium apple, 3 TBSP almond butter
Snack 2: 1/2 large sweet potato, olive mix, 2 TBSP almond butter
Sorry but it sounds like you still have an eating disorder. You exercise a lot, probably too much, and are not eating enough, your BMI is borderline underweight. Paleo, and other restrictive diets, tend to be magnets for people with anorexia or orthorexia. Check youreatopia.com for tips in how to deal.
It doesn't look -- based on your sample meals for the day -- that you're eating enough to keep up with your strenuous workouts. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but restricting your calories when you are this active can actually cause your body to go into "starvation mode" and stop all the progress your making.
Eat more (healthy) foods to change this. Trust me. I know from experience, I damaged my metabolism doing the same thing that you're describing above and it took me years to recover. You're 16 years old and quite possibly still developing. You need more calories.
Please stop working out every day. You are so young, just eat well, go outside, take long walks listening to music or daydreaming ... why do you need to be so strong? Are you an athlete? Why are you focusing so much on your diet and working out? What else do you do? Why not stop the working out and take up a team sport - you can get your workouts in while doing something that teaches you skills and teamwork and cooperation. It just seems sad to me that a young girl is caught up in a cycle of restriction and obsession that will skew your joy in life. Please try to relax and enjoy things. Good luck!
You do need to gain weight as you are very underweight right now (I'm the same height as you exactly and I weight 118 and am a size 2, so I can't imagine being any smaller). Probably this gain is going to be a combination of fat and muscle because you have to be realistic. Fat is necessary for lots of reasons. Seriously, you could be setting yourself up for osteoporosis, infertility, and chilblains, just to name a few. I've had the chilblains and I'm not even as small as you. You should throw away the scale and do a whole30. It forces you to eat healthy without the scale as a distraction.
I don't know if anyone has said it yet, but you look great! I'm 23 now (female), but when I was younger, I had a lot of body image issues. A lot of nitpicking of what my body looked like.
This sounds really cliche, but I can't stress enough how true it is... you are so beautiful right now, and when you get older, it's going to be painful that you were so hard on yourself. Trust me, just enjoy your beauty now, focus on those PR's, and make the most of life!
You are in mid-adolescence years and you look good. You exercise too much, so much that one might think you'll be an athlete. If there's one exercise you have to do, that must be core exercises that employ all of the widest angle your body normally can make with ease since that's where you are concerned about. Too much physical stress may cause overeating, though it doesn't seem so. To be able to tell if that example is overeating for you one needs to know your age, height, weight. You should focus on your interests and capabilities to make a direction for a career as definite as possible and direct your effort in that direction to pass your working years in a job you like if you haven't done so. It seems like you are planning a sports career.
Not to be rude, but you post like everyday obsessing over your weight. If you want health and vitality, stick with Paleo. You might gain a little. If so, it was your body's way of telling you that needed to happen. I promise, you won't get "fat" eating meat and vegetables. If you're only interested in being thin, then do whatever you need to do to take in as few calories as possible each day and see where that lands you.
I think you need help beyond what can be provided here.
