I've been dealing with a sudden onset diarrhea bout for 5 months after eating at a dirty college burrito joint. Seriously haven't been the same since. Paleo helped me tremendously the first 1.5 weeks but now the diarrhea is back with a vengeance. I'm so discouraged! I'm trying so hard and it's just getting worse! Help!
I went to the doctor in the beginning. Stools came back neg but they put me on flagyl and two rounds of cipro with no change:( next step is colonoscopy but I fear we'll spend the money to be given an ibs diagnosis.
Are you taking high-dose fish oil? I just read in the "omega rx zone" by Barry Sears, that too many "good" eicosanoids can cause diarrhea. Basically, the idea is to look at energy, stools, hair and many other health status data to give you a clue about your hormonal situation. I know you said this started with an infection, but I just thought I'd throw this idea in the mix in case it could be a possible factor for you, because the infection cleared up yes? And then later returned, so could be unrelated?
Have you tried probiotics? They worked good for me when I was in Mexico City. I get them from Kirkman Labs. They have really good quality products. The Super Pro Bio are very strong: http://kirkmanlabs.com/ProductKirkman/190/1/SuperPro-Bioand75Billion-Bio-MaxSeries-Hypoallergenic/
These work well too: http://kirkmanlabs.com/ProductKirkman/186/1/Pro-BioGoldand-Hypoallergenic/
Thanks all. I realize that I didn't give much detail in my initial message (late night on phone). I saw docs in beginning and nothing showed on stool tests. A few weeks later, I found out I was pregnant. I started paleo that week and made it 14 days until morning sickness hit. I couldn't stand the sight of meat or veggies for the next month, even though I had started feeling well on the diet. I tried various alternatives, including calcium with each meal, apple cider vinegar, Imodium, glucosamine(?), intense probiotics (still on 10 billion/day), kombucha, and now acupuncture. Probably leaving some things out. As soon as morning sickness passed, I got back on paleo (2 weeks ago). Everything was fine until I cheated one night at a party and had some cheese and popcorn and some potato chips the following day. It's been 5 days and my system is a mess. I don't think colonoscopy will show anything and since I'm pregnant, I'm not sure it's the safest route. 17 weeks preg FYI
