I've fallen into the (good?) habit of drinking lots of coconut water. It's usually between 8-24 oz per day. I feel like this stuff is really amazing!
What's your take on packaged coconut water?
This started when struggling to get enough potassium without going overboard on fibrous veggies but when I realized the impact it had on my other minerals, I was in love! The nutritional bang for your caloric buck is pretty difficult to beat with other beverages or food in general.
Not to mention the stuff is delightfully refreshing early morning or after a workout and goes well with spiced rum and ice in the evenings.
I mostly drink VitaCoco because it's pure, cheap, and convenient. If you're not spoiled by fresh young coconuts (too much work for me) I suggest give it a try. Buy in bulk at Costco :-)
Since the first few responses mention sugar, I'll add that it has more fiber, more protein, vitamins, and WAY more minerals (though about the same mineral distribution) per calorie than a sweet potato, and is quite satiating, and doesn't actually have much sugar to start with. AND most of the sugar is glucose. So unless you're trying to stay in ketosis, I don't see the problem...
Seems good to me. When I was in Brazil, I too drank loads of the stuff - it's fresh, cheap and delicious - I didn't notice any problem with sugars. Don't know what it's like where you are, but in the UK coconut water tends to be UHT, expensive and tastes of plastic - I don't bother! I use plenty of coconut milk and oil in smoothies and for cooking, but coconut water can wait until I can get it fresh again.
So I guess I'm the only one (of those respondents at least) who sees coconut water as this amazing super-nutritious nectar of the gods? I mean this stuff is really amazing. Basically in all the same ways as a sweet potato is... only more convenient and incredibly refreshing. BTW most of the sugar is glucose (just added that up top too).
If you're willing to eat starches, then I guess there's nothing wrong with consuming glucose more directly. Especially if you are physically active and metabolically sound.
This winter I started drinking amazaki, which gets its sweetness from the breakdown of rice starch into glucose. It's even used as a traditional cold remedy in Japan.
The only potential issue I can see is the addictive nature of sweet foods. Some people can't stop themselves from over consumption.
Let's not push the word super on as many things as possible.
The number 1 reason to drink coconut water is cytokinins, next may be potassium, but I'm not sure if it is a good idea to drink heat treated coconut water, I wouldn't drink heat treated coconut water regularly or thinking it is super unless I realize some healthful effects which I think is not much likely:
