I live 90 miles north of Spokane WA.

1 doz free range organic eggs are roughly $4.50

1 gal of raw milk is $9.

1 lb of grass fed ground been is about $6.

Curious about other areas.

Cheapest - New Hampshire at $3.7 per lb.

Mid Michigan (no Whole Foods or Trader Joes to be seen)

Pastured Eggs - $2.50 (farmers market)

Raw milk - ILLEGALZ. :( Name brand grass fed milk from a local grocer (Kroger) is ~$8/gallon

Grass fed ground beef - $5/lb (farmers market)

Lancaster, PA

Pastured Eggs - $1.50/dozen straight off the farm

Raw Milk - $3 a gallon from the same farm as the eggs. It is from holsteins and I don't think it is exclusively grass fed. I get mine for $3.50 a gallon from my local farmer's market though because it tastes better

Grass fed ground beef - I've seen it for $6 a pound, but grass fed beef is the one thing that I have trouble finding in Central PA, despite being surrounded by farmland. Many of the farm stores that carry it have inconvenient hours/locations. The closest whole foods or trader joes is 90 minutes away.

I don't typically buy dairy. So here in Vermont, Local, Ground beef ~7-8$ per pound, eggs usually $5 even per dozen. These foods come from within probably 70 miles of where I live.

This may seem expensive to some, but it isn't to me. The quality of both the animal products AND the plant foods are of amazing quality. I tell my family "They taste like vt" and it's true. But in a good way, not a gross one, haha.

Rural Northern Nevada:

Eggs from a farm (not necessarily truly free range, but moreso than most of the "free range" eggs found in stores - the place we usually buy from has them in outdoor coops) are $1.50-$3/dozen ($3 seems to be the going price in Reno, but it's cheaper out here), at least this time of year. Conventional eggs are a bit cheaper.

Last time we ordered a partial cow (a few months ago), it was in the range of $2.50/lb. Conventional meat is less - we generally pay under $2/lb, (though that may be for less than prime cuts on clearance). Another local ranch (which does online ordering and shipping) is more like $4.50/lb, which is still less than most of you all are paying, probably even after the shipping, so give them an order! http://www.millsranch.org/. I've been to the ranch, and they're a good place.

No clue about milk, since we don't buy it, and raw isn't legal so I'm not finding it on craigslist. I'm seeing $9/gallon just over the California border. I think conventional was around $4 a gallon when we got some recently to bottlefeed a goat. We occasionally barter with our neighbor for goat milk.

Downsides: If you don't buy from farms, your only option is conventional grocery stores (or driving at least an hour). This also means that availability and pricing is somewhat seasonal. We utilize Amazon for a lot of our non-perishable shopping because there aren't good options locally for a lot of what we want. And it's pretty much the middle of nowhere, and not quite my cup of tea culturally.

Albany, NY -

Dozen Pastured Eggs: $3 - $5 (avg. $4)

1 Gallon Raw Milk: $5 (plus an hour's worth of gas roundtrip)

1lb Grass Fed Beef: $6 - $10 (avg. $8)

The nice thing is all of the products are truly local. The price differences are "direct from farmer" vs. markup at the markets or local health food store.

a week ago in Kansas City, on the Kansas side: pasteured eggs (Mennonite farmers) were $6 for 18 count Raw milk (Mennonite farmer) runs around $7 a gallon if you belong to the dairy CSA plus $4 for the bottle deposit. They had a try it with 1/2 gallon for free if you paid the bottle deposit. Grass fed beef or lamb $5 to $8 per lb. depending on cut (both grass finished also) and *Local *Grass fed/finished Bison around $6/lb for ground. Our Trader Joes just opened yesterday and I haven't gotten over there to check out prices, but right now I'm happy with the quality and prices from the Farmers Market. I forgot to add that a local nursery (plants) has free range chickens already frozen for $2.99 a lb which is outstanding. They are way out in the country and you never know if that chicken you bought is one you saw running down the driveway a couple weeks ago as you pulled in.

Pastured eggs: from $2.75/doz to about $3.50/doz. I actually pay $2 for a flat (1 1/2 doz) because a co-worker is also a farmer and he likes us. Everyone else gets charged a mite more (about $3/flat).

Raw Milk- I pay $5.50/gallon for Jersey milk straight off the farm. I've seen it in retail at about $3 for a half gallon for Holstein (but, yuck! Tried it once.) I've seen local listings for Jersey milk at $3 a gallon, but that's a bit below the going rate, so I didn't bother seeking out the farm as that makes me think they may not be up to snuff and I don't want to deal with the hassle of finding the place and then analyzing it. Plus, where I go now is super convenient- practically across the street from a health food store. :-)

Ground Beef (pastured)- $4.50-$4.75/lb where I get it (same beef, the cheaper is at the health food store, the pricier is on the farm- I don't think it's THEIR beef- but sometimes the store is out, so I pay more at the farm). I've seen it at another farm for over $5/lb.

I should point out that cage free/"free range" eggs in the grocery store are about $3.50/doz but are rarely actually pastured, regular ground beef is between $3.50 and $4/lb usually, and regular milk is about $3.50 a gallon (I think). So, for about $2 extra a week, I eat a LOT better. Though it is a little more running- takes me about an hour every weekend to hit the farm and health food store. There are no Whole Foods or Trader Joes around here, but a lot of little mom & pop type health food stores- one of which carries Green Pastures products at the same or lower price as ordering in bulk online. Yay!

lol True- "my farm" is an Amish farm- so is the health food store, actually. Another farm where I get pastured chicken and pork is plain Mennonite. Quality varies from farm to farm. For example, my dad's neighbor actually eats margarine (ew!) but his eyes lit up when I mentioned how much pastured turkey goes for. :-D The farm I get my milk from is a private buyers club, and they follow WAPF. They even sell NT and have tons of WAPF flyers. Love them! And I KNOW how well pastured their animals are, I always see the Jerseys grazing, and almost ran over the chickens several times. – WordVixen Jul 17 2011 at 23:22

Germany, Lower Saxony, Twist

Free range pastured eggs: $2.54/dozen

Raw milk: $2.67/gallon

Grass-fed ground beef: $3.80/lb

All prices after currency conversion, obviously. Food is cheap in western Lower Saxony: Great if you can live with the digital diaspora and cultural wasteland.

San Antonio, Texas:

• Raw milk gallon - $6
• 1 lb. grass-fed ground beef - $3.50
• Dozen pasture farm eggs - $3

I don't buy the milk very often, unless I'm making yogurt. More often, I'll opt for raw cream instead, which is $8/quart.

We belong to a local food buyers club (RealFoodSA.com) so these prices reflect a group buying discount. You would pay significantly more - especially for the eggs and beef - if you bought directly from the farm as an individual.

Poulsbo, WA in the house! Organic eggs from farmer's market around 4-5 bucks a dozen although now I think my husband has a connection at work for eggs for 3 bucks...we'll see how that goes. Milk, only goat's milk available at our market is 8 bucks, 1/2 gallon. I buy Twin brooks creamery milk, non-homagenized for around 4 bucks a gallon, and beef from Farmer Tom at the market for about 7-12 a pound, depending on the cut. I consider us pretty lucky regarding prices...it breaks my heart to see people have to pay so much more for different things in different areas of the country.

I live in southern MD- pastured eggs are about $3 a doz from local farmers, I hear illegal raw milk from the Amish is $3 a gallon (!!!), and before my gf beef source stopped selling (due to too many complications from the county gov) it was $6/lb. Now I order from Vermont or go 1.5 hours to my nearest Whole Foods in Annapolis. We have a health food store that sells non-homogenized gf milk for $4 per quart; it's a mom & pop place, so their prices are pretty high.

Local wild salmon: $17/kg (I dont buy beef when salmon is in season, i only eat fish then, better value and i like it more)

grass fed ground beef $18.2/kg
