Is it necessary, this motherly advice? Is there a better alternative to scraping away tooth enamel in the name of health? Someone on here recommended coconut oil as a rinse. Joking or no it seems to work fairly well...Any alternativexs to the mundane Conventional wisdumb? P.S: I am establishing a farm on the Lower mainland of BC and would like some assistance...anyone wanting to live a minimalist lifestyle going 'back to the land' can meet me there in September. What a day - we get Stephen aegis and now personman! Welcome back – ben61820 Jul 16 2011 at 16:06
Hey ben: what do the numbers that proceed your name 'denote' if anything"? – PersonMan Jul 16 2011 at 17:13
I may be interested in the farm but not for another year or so. I plan on living in Canada when I'm older anyway. Guess I should start posting on craigs list for a green card marriage. – Danielle Jul 17 2011 at 1:40
Or HERE! Danielle + PeronsMan! – none Jul 17 2011 at 1:58
I'll second that ben. – DudleyP Jul 17 2011 at 19:23

I don't use fluoride toothpaste but dental floss is a true mark of progress.

Some sort of technique is better than no technique, I do like oil pulling. Evolution is only so good, we have natural defenses against tooth decay but that doesn't mean that they are perfect and are going to sustain us throughout a long life of ignoring it.

Though my chosen techniques (currently) are flossing (most important...to me), water picking (2nd most), then brushing. – Katherine Jul 16 2011 at 16:53

plus one on the oil pulling...with a mild brushing afterwards.

i am starting to look forward to my morning oil ritual.

i agree that it is more effective than brushing. particularly on plaque.

A miswak is a great alternative to a toothbrush. Has been used in the middle east for centuries. It is basically a twig from a tree that has antimicrobial properties. Sisson mentioned it in a post here: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-to-take-care-of-your-teeth/, and referred to one study that showed miswaks removed more plaque and resulted in better gingival health than toothbrushes.

Found some on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/MISWAK-8-Long-Box-60/dp/B002PJG1C0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1310833041&sr=8-6. Relatively inexpensive.

And here is a random video on youtube showing how to use a miswak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwomQ7v1bN0

The wikipedia article is useful as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miswak

I floss and use oil of oregano mixed with some olive or coconut oil to swish. Dilute that oregano oil, though - spicy.

What does "oil pulling" mean? A strange term indeed. I didn't realize a liquid had the property of being 'pulled'. – PersonMan Jul 16 2011 at 17:15
I call it swishing - oil pulling I think relates to the premise that swishing the oil around your mouth for 20 minutes is supposed to "pull" various toxins out of the body. I dunno - I just swish with the oregano because is it a very potent antimicrobial. – none Jul 16 2011 at 17:20

The pulling prob refers to forcing the oil through the spaces between the teeth as one swishes it around. I have done this for years seems to work well and my dental visits are brief. No plaque, no tarter. oilpulling.com/oilpullingmethod.htm – Josh M Jul 16 2011 at 17:36

the oil replaces the animal fats we would have chewed down on in Paleo times. It also massages the gums, and makes them stronger. – DudleyP Jul 17 2011 at 19:25

I only brush my teeth following carbs with a toothbrush no paste. Have been to 2 dentist checkups since, great dental health.. Very minimal cleaning.

I've found the same to be the case: carbs are the cavity culprit – PersonMan Jul 17 2011 at 22:29

I use baking soda

Hi Danielle. I would watch out for the baking soda. I heard it has high amounts of aluminum(or some derivative of aluminum) in it and that this will cause alzheimer's. This is mainly what prompted my question as I was using baking soda until I stumbled upon that info. I don't have a link but maaybe google "aluminum in baking soda"(obviously). As to the farm: Brendan409@hotmail.com will get me messages. – PersonMan Jul 17 2011 at 16:09
That's interesting. I use it as deodorant also. Hmm. – Danielle Jul 17 2011 at 21:25
BAd idea: men would be attracted to natural bodily scent. Stay away from deodorant also and save a few bucks in the process. – PersonMan Jul 17 2011 at 22:30
baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate. personman is might be thinking of baking powder - which often, but not always, has aluminum in it. – g. Jul 29 2011 at 5:58

I knew a woman that rubbed the inside of orange peels on her teeth instead of brushing, had beautifully white teeth.

Not sure if she was just lucky, or if it actually works.

I know people who use these toothbrushes without paste... The bristles are in a silver bed, so they are naturally antibacterial. https://erinpatota.norwex.biz/?p=n&sectid=4&cid=9&pid=354050. I have yet to give it a try.
