I ask this as inspired by my lunch, which is so far shaping up to be an enormous bowl of Brussels sprouts roasted in salted Kerrygold.
Do you regularly consume meals that happen to have no animal protein? If so, what do they look like?
I thought about this one and I don't think I consider it a "MEAL" without meat. If it doesn't have meat, it's just a snack.
Yes, they are. I am eating fruit for lunch today. In the next few months, I plan to fast one day a month or so. During those days, protein-free meals (aka water) will be the norm.
That being said, I eat meat with almost every meal. But having such a regular diet is something that I have always been suspicious of.
So glad you asked this! I always eat some form of animal protein and lately, I'm seeing a little pudge in my midsection. I'm going to take a cue from Kamal and start to experiment with protein fasting. I've also started to consider going off IF and back to several small meals per day. I've become to dogmatic about paleo and feel that I need to question how/what I eat a bit more.
Sometimes jerusalem artichokes steamed and dipped in Kerrygold are a satisfying option for me. Maybe you didn't hunt anything today, maybe the PETA activists share a cubicle with you --or maybe you just feel like it. As the non-expert of the group, I hereby approve your lunch. Although, you know what's really good? Brussel sprouts and bacon. Mm.
Rarely. And when I do, it is only because of the following reasons:
I am eating out and just having a salad because the menu does not appeal to me.
Its 100 humid degrees in East Texas, tomatoes are in season and am having cold tomato basil salad (sometimes with fresh mozzarella).
Or I just decide it's an "Ice Cream for Dinner" kind of day, because I'm human and I can. (Usually this also coincides with a 100 degree day)
During the unbelievably hot summers here, sometimes protein is not very appetizing after breakfast. Then I usually like the above mentioned items or berries, macadamia nuts, pickles, and fresh raw coconut. Meals without animal protein seem weird to me, more like a snack.
I realize it's probably good for me to do a little protein fast to help kick in some autophagy once in a while. But I don't plan it. Most meals are very protein heavy (>1lb of meat every meal). But if I get busy and can't get to lunch or dinner, I just don't worry about it and call that my protein fast.
i do this quite a bit. at least with minimal protein. i love love love vegetables, even more now on paleo than i did as a vegetarian. my senses are so much more sensitive! i love roasted broccoli with some lemon juice and maybe a touch of shaved parm or some sliced almonds. raw brussels shredded and mixed with chopped apples and lemongrass aioli. strawberry spinach salad. and currys. especially coming into spring with all the amazing veggies starting to become available, and the weather becomes warmer, i look forward to my fat and veggie meals.
