Hello all. I am fairly new to Paleo. I wanted to say it is wonderful to meet you all. I have learned much from this blog. I wanted to ask why you all went Paleo? I do not have food allergies, but I noticed that whenever I ate grains, I actually felt more hungry. People would say, " Oatmeal sticks to your ribs." Well, oatmeal actually made me more hungry. Do grains actually make you more hungry? Thanks all for your feedback. I appreciate you all.
Grains fill me up. I think a lot of people who have eaten according to a conventional American paradigm literally don't know what "hunger" is. You can't eat something that makes you more hungry. However, a lot of people get the munchies from grains and most snack foods. It's not much different, IMO, from a stoner saying that marijuana makes them "hungry"... It's not hunger!
Try going 16 hours without food. When your stomach is empty and your glycogen stores are waining, and your blood sugar is dropping and you're running out of certain micronutrient reserves, you'll understand what hunger is. I think it's therapeutic to "experience hunger" once or twice a day in this sense (though 16 hours isn't required). Let yourself feel real hunger so you can stop confusing it with the munchies!
Wheat supposedly has opioids or something that stimulates opioid receptors. Been a while since I read up on it. This creates an addiction and the more you eat it the more you "want" it. But you're not really experiencing hunger, just an impulse to eat.
Well cooked grains have high glycemic and insulin index.
GI of pure glucose is 100 and fructose is 15.
Grains are full of starch, which is a long chain of glucose.
Quick rise in blood sugar causes intense release of
insulin. Here is a nice graph describing the effect of high glycemic foods.
Mixed meal of protein, fat and carb causes slow rise in blood sugar.
You may have less problem if you eat grains with fat and protein.
Grains are also low in potassium, which plays a big role in
metabolising glucose. This is the reason fruits are better
at keeping stable blood sugar. You still need to eat fruits
with protein and fat. Fiber also lowers glycemic index.
