Hi everyone,

I am currently eating 1800-2000 cals, split between 4 meals per day, weighing in at 320lb. Macros are 68% fat/30% protein/2% carb (<20g of carb per day). I weight train 3 times per week for strength (60-minute sessions), and another 30-minute session for elliptical.

I just want to know if I am eating enough to cut weight cause it has slowed down alot in the last few weeks. I've dropped 30lb initially.

I'm 5'11", male, 26 years old, been overweight my entire life.

Thanks!

Dude c'mon, you didn't mention height or sex, history, etc. How long you been over weight? – ben61820 Jul 19 2011 at 17:12
Done, I've edited the post. – AsianXL Jul 19 2011 at 17:15
I am new at this as well, and the following website has proven to be a great resource. Here is a link to one of my favorite articles, about carbs mainly but touches on macronutrient proportions depending on your goal. marksdailyapple.com/… – pistachio Jul 19 2011 at 19:27

I remember you posting before, so I checked out your previous question and see that on June 24th you posted that you were at 329#, if that's right, and you are 320# now, you've lost 9# in less than 4 weeks. I don't know much about weight loss, and i realize you've got a way to go to reach your goal, but that doesn't seem too shabby to me. Just sayin, in the spirit of encouragement.

I admire your commitment to this, and I think you're doing great! Slow and steady wins the race, right?

plus, you're prolly gaining some muscle. – g. Jul 19 2011 at 18:04
Hi grenadine, thanks for your encouragement and compliments. I was hoping that I could lose a bit more in those 4 weeks, and be as efficient as possible in fat burning. I personally don't think I'm gaining any muscles, cause my resistance training has dipped a bit in the last few weeks or has plateaued. Is this normal? – AsianXL Jul 19 2011 at 20:29
yeah, i hear you. i don't know anything about weight-training... hopefully someone will chime in about that. I'm think there are some formerly obese people around here that didn't exercise at all for the bulk of their weight loss. i'm not saying that as advice, just as a point of interest. Keep on keeping on! – g. Jul 19 2011 at 21:57

30 initial pounds is great! Congrats!

You might examine your stress level and sleep time. Sleep does it for me. I need 8+ hours to see steady fat loss.

Also, it seems like you're over-training. If your goal is weight loss, then eating 1800-2000 kCal a day with regular strength training isn't going to do you any favors. I'd recommend MDA's approach: lift one day, sprint one day (rather, get your heartrate up to a sprinting pace, with whatever exercise), and go long and easy one day.

dude are you serious? sprinting is a horrible idea when your 320 pounds – matt Jul 19 2011 at 17:55

I suppose that's pretty relative, matt, but I edited to appease your rude ass. – Ben Jul 19 2011 at 18:00
I've had two dramatic weight losses in my life before paleo. In each instance I saw correlation between stress relief and weight loss. – dorchid11 Jul 19 2011 at 19:51
Ben -> I get 8+ hrs of sleep per day too. Also, what's MDA's approach? Do you have a link? I would like to take a look, and thanks for the compliment. Would HIIT be a better approach? – AsianXL Jul 19 2011 at 20:32

Dunno if I'm gonna get flamed for this answer.. but honestly.. I would sincerely suggest you try out Crossfit. Let me rephrase that.. try out Crossfit from a GOOD gym.. not one of the many that seem to have mushroomed up in the recent times. You'll feel stronger and healthier than you've ever felt before.. guarenteed.

5'11 320 might be tough at Crossfit, no? – ben61820 Jul 19 2011 at 17:23

Agree here. Eat properly, and walk a bunch. – Todd Jul 19 2011 at 17:31

Anyone can do crossfit. It's scalable to any level. Although, if weightloss is the goal, and not gaining overal athletic fitness, I wouldn't do CF. – Ben Jul 19 2011 at 17:46

Albert "if you're focus is still dropping weight, cut the fat intake" I understand (correct me if I'm wrong people) that a high fat, VLC intake is best suited to weight loss and Increasing carbs or protein would slow weight loss. – Karen Jul 19 2011 at 19:04

I'm not a fan of Crossfit, especially not at my current weight. I don't want to increase the risk of blowing out my knees. – AsianXL Jul 19 2011 at 20:34

Not if you have a good coach that will make up scaled workouts for you. That is the job of your trainer is to figure out your goals and to get you there safely and efficiently! I was 250 pounds and lost 135 lbs through crossfit and diet so i know what your going through. If I were you lower pro higher carb slightly through veggies (dont go nuts) Less fats if you go online to the zone diet. com it will show you how many blocks you get per day which takes guess work out of how much to eat because then you go and download he table that gives foods values or easy to look up on line. So I do pale zone so i eat paleo foods in zone portions so takes out the what and the how much guess work mind fuck game. You will have to weigh and measure food but after a month you get used to it. This works for me and i compete in oly lifting and seems to support what i am doing. So if i were you i would look up zone and paleo and try it and see if it works for you. Are you eating dairy I would take that out too. This IS going to take hard work and dedication to see how you can make this work ie; prep and measure foods in bulk or figuring out how to pack lunches. (Bulk bags of chicken and veggie helps if you have costco that helps!)If you ever need anything as far as advise i am a personal trainer as well with level 1 crossfit cert, NFPT group ex, mobility and weightlifting i would be happy to answer any questions you may have! my email is passionatefitnesstrainer4u@gmail.com I encourage you to pick my brain! If I dont talk to you good luck and keep up the good work!Keep us posted!

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the response. first and foremost, I would like to congratulate you for the weight loss, even if it may have been a while ago. Currently, I perform calorie and carb count. I use my food scale daily so I know exactly (within limits) of what I put into my body. Besides cheese on occasion and the HEAVY cream for my tea and coffee, I don't eat any other dairy products. Besides the Paleo Zone diet that you've mentioned, I've put most of what you suggested in place. I would like to think that there are great fitness trainers out there (not saying that you're a bad one). – AsianXL Jul 20 2011 at 2:50
Unfortunately, all of the fitness trainers that I've worked with in the past weren't very good, they've designed fitness programs that I had no interest in doing, and never helped me with my nutrition neither. But again, that was over 10 years ago, things may be alot different now. I would like to thank you on your offer in providing me with your assistance. Don't be surprised if I do send you that e-mail. Cheers! – AsianXL Jul 20 2011 at 2:53

Drop your workouts to ~30 min of weight training per session, 3 X per week. I think you'll see better returns on your investment. Try not to create more than ~1000-500 cal deficit each day or your body can start fighting your efforts to reduce its fat stores.

Congrats on dropping 9 lbs in 4 weeks. Stick to your paleo guns and you should see a lot more melt away right before your eyes.
