I have been asked by several people what do I eat - or "what could I eat" (if the asker is paleo) when I go to the movie theater. With all the temptation of candy, nachos, popcorn, soda etc what are some good snacks to sneak in your bag for a movie night? (Or for a movie night at home!)

I know its somewhat frowned upon to sneak in your own snacks BUT..... can we overlook that point for now? :D Any recipes or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Great question. My only major cheat these days is popcorn. I love the stuff. In moderation, it doesn't harm me too much, but I'd love to have options. – Aaron Griffin May 27 2010 at 18:17

99% cocoa bars are mostly fats and antioxidants and once you're used to/enjoy the slight bitter twang are excellent – Stephen-Aegis May 27 2010 at 22:00

My favorite snack is freeze-dried berries (blueberries or raspberries) and freeze-dried strawberry slices. I love the crunch! I get these at my local Wegman's grocery store, in the natural foods section. – JCC Jun 11 2010 at 15:19

How about eating nothing at all? To me, watching a movie is a great time to start or extend a fast for a few hours. I honestly don't know if our paleo ancestors had entertainment (skits, stories, etc.) before, during or after eating--they probably did it all those ways at various times. So it's probably not a paleo issue, just my personal preference, FWIW.

According to Don't Sleep There Are Snakes, when the Piraha tribe was dancing and partying they wouldn't eat for as many as three days... – Bread-Eating Beelzebub May 27 2010 at 23:58

While I do see both of your points and they are valid, I would also say they probably aren't for everyone. Most people want to conform their diets to the healthy alternative of paleo while also allowing themselves to "live a little bit". More power to you guys if you can be hard core fast and think like a super caveman/woman. – PaleoInPink Jun 1 2010 at 20:44

Thank you Ed, I was debating whether to give just this answer and you saved me the flack. Personally I have absolutely no problems going to the movies sans "snacks", I usually only eat one meal at night anyway. Also I hate the noise of nearby inconsiderate people crinkling wrappers and stuffing their faces. Just fast I say. Ducking and running... – Alan Sep 8 2010 at 4:43

If I don't have a snack, I chew all of my nails off during a movie. – Sara Apr 26 2011 at 18:20

+ 1 million for this. There is nothing more annoying than the sound of other people chomping on things when I'm trying to hear what's going on in a movie! Chew gum if you must chew something!! – gydle Apr 29 2012 at 11:50

Before you go to the theater, take some raw nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc) and microwave them with some pastured butter. Nuke for 20 seconsd or so, stir, nuke again until butter is melted and nuts are coated. Sprinkle with salt, and you have a VERY good substitute for popcorn.

Kale chips! Bake kale leaves in the oven sprinkled with olive oil and sea salt for ten min...makes a perfect movie snack.

I don't know if you have any of these near you, but we have some 21+ movie theaters around here with full bars and kitchens, and I've yet to miss popcorn while sipping a generous pour of shiraz and nibbling on meat kabobs. The prices of concessions in normal theaters are so ridiculously inflated that even with a decadent appetizer and booze it costs nearly the same as the old standards.

Whew, I was reading this thread and thought "am I the only one that eats the popcorn?!" Butter-flavored topping FTW! – Jules K Apr 24 2012 at 19:39

I recently took a pear to the Hunger Games and sadly enjoyed the pear much more than the movie. (wah-wah)

But I think pumpkin seeds taste an awful lot like popcorn, so that would be my suggestion.

I remember when I was in high school, I would sometimes go to the movies with this short skinny little asian guy. What he would do was wear a big baggy jacket and then we would stop at McDonald's and he would buy a big mac, a huge thing of fries, and a big coke, to go. They would put it in a bag for him and as we got near the movie theatre entrance, he would jam this whole bag down the front of his jacket and stroll in casually. He would have to sort of hold his stomach with his hand to keep the coke from tipping over. Not only did it make him look like he was pregnant, cuz he was so thin already, but he would just wreak of fries and burger. But they never stopped him. Obviously, this is not paleo at all, but it sure was damned funny. And because of this, I have no problem with embarrassment if I happen to have a few snacks with me from home. Besides, good sashimi should not have a strong smell to it at all.

Once, I snuck in our dog the same way! Couldn't bear leaving him at home and he only weighed 3.5lbs. Looked pregnant. He was perfectly quiet and well behaved. Didn't eat him, though! – MiMintzer May 10 2012 at 18:50

My movie indulgence is dehydrated kale chips, with a cashew based "cheese" on them (cashews, red pepper, nut. yeast, sea salt. So crunchy and satisfying, and doesn't hurt my stomach the way popcorn always did!

One usher gave me some trouble once. I told him "look, do you really make enough money here to care? I just bring my own food cause the crap outside tastes like garbage." I offered him some of what I was eating, dumplings I think (not paleo at the time), he took a few and let it slide. – Bruno Dec 3 2010 at 14:10

My favorite movie snack is a whole pomegranate.

Not only is it deilcious, but it is fun to eat and it takes most of the movie to eat one if you start with it whole!

Peeling it and pulling the kernel's off is part of the fun. Just don't get frustrated and take a bite out because that will be messy.

Ditto the pumpkin seeds, roasted in the shell and lightly salted. Keeps my hands out of the kids' popcorn, and hits the crunchy salty buttons.

I was pleasantly surprised to go to an independent theatre in the city recently where I got a fresh brewed cup of coffee from locally roasted beans. Coffee! And it was great for keeping me up a little bit when the movie started to drag.

So perhaps it's a question of what movie theatres in your area offer different fare from the major chains?

Theo's Chocolates from seattle makes an organic all in US bean-to-bar in a 91% its AMAZING!

you can make very easy coconut macaroons with coconut flakes and egg whites + optional nuts (if you can afford the omega 6s) or optional cocoa powder and chocolate (never tried because I don't have enough dark chocolate / too expensive for my budget to make a whole batch). I've made the non-paleo version for my girlfriend and she loved them. If you add some honey they're bound to be delicious, but I try and stay away from the sugar

Try it out, they're mad healthy and you can make them bite sized (so you can feel like you're eating more)

I bring jerkies, some fruits (berries), celery and the like, and water!

Chopped jerky and nuts in a "trail mix" is my go-to snack.

Dried cranberries, cashews and 80% dark chocolate is what I make so that I don't eat the Twizzlers I always crave :)

A pint sized tupperware with steaming hot spicy pulled pork. It will smell like nachos so no one will notice it's not "movie theater food". Grab a baby plastic spork so the handle fits inside your hand as if you were holding a nacho.

And tiny half inch meatballs (only slightly bigger than popcorn)

I usually bring cashews, beef jerkey, and a bottle of water.

Just discovered some good ones recently:

Frozen Grapes: There are AMAZING frozen and you have to slow down while eating them.

Sweet Ripe Plantain Chips: Usually have only a few grams of sugar per bag and fried in palm oil.

Rice Crackers (Assuming you follow the safe starch principle): I enjoy the ones made with fermented soy sauce (no gluten). Yes, there is soy but it is minimal.

Coconut Macaroons: Try the ones from Aleias. Only one gram of sugar per small coconut macaroon. Don't go overboard and you'll be fine.

Banana Ice Cream: Make this beforehand, freeze it a bit then eat with a spoon at the theater.

If I snack, I snack on SeaSnaxs: http://store.seasnax.com/

Seaweed, roasted... Each small bag is 30 calories. Sliced English cucumbers with lime, salt and chili. Sunflower seeds.
