With so many people shunning soap and shampoo, what's the general thought on dental hygiene? Brush, floss, mouthwash? Someone told me about chewing certain types of leaves for hygiene purposes. What say you?

I used to brush systematically twice a day and floss once a day regardless, but since going very low carb and almost eliminating fruit on a daily basis, I find that I require less brushing. So it has turned into a less regular, as-and-when-needed basis, whereby I mainly try to observe the following self-imposed rules:
All of this usually results in brushing my teeth (with ordinary toothpaste) between 1 and 2 times a day, rarely 3. I no longer use mouthwash as I have found that when I started flossing I didn't need the former (and I reckon flossing might be slightly less "dangerous"). I don't chew commercial gum. I've heard about the leaf-chewing idea but never really looked into it. I would be interested to know more, though. I might add that two years ago before going paleo I had a rather large, painful, chronic gum abscess (while brushing and mouthwashing twice daily) that would have required treatment. After changing my diet (and nothing else) it completely receded within a few months and has never reappeared since. |

Once when I wake up and once before going to bed is it for me. No toothpaste though, just plain ol' dr. Bronnors liquid soap. That's it. Oh and I do indeed floss every night - feels good. Mouthwash only after the occasional smoke;) oh and I will be a littlemore careful after eating cheese, though. I think it can linger and be none too pleasant for your partner. |

Some claim Vitamin K supplements are beneficial to dental health. I once knew a Nigerian who chewed on some kind of stick rather than brush and had the most beautiful teeth I had ever seen. Peelu makes a toothpaste based on these sticks but the sticks themselves are available online. Never tried them but think I just might. |

Personally? I brush twice a day (maybe once with toothpaste) and floss once a day. I never use mouthwash. One of my concerns with toothpaste is fluoride's volatile nature. |

I brush at night after dinner but as I rarely eat during the day except for my morning coffee and a raw egg/cream shake after training I don't bother during the day. |

I no longer use shampoo or commercial toothpaste. I wash my hair every day with water and use the recipe below as a toothpaste. Toothpaste Ingredients: 4 tablespoons baking soda 2 tablespoons coconut oil (warmed to liquid state) 3 teaspoons xylitol - sweetener (optional) I don't use a sweetener! 15 drops peppermint oil - flavor (optional) Mix everything in a small bowl until it forms a uniform paste. Add more peppermint oil five drops at a time, tasting as you go, if you like it stronger. Transfer to a small glass jar or storage container with a tight-fitting lid. The toothpaste will keep unrefrigerated for months.” |

Usually I'll brush after drinking my morning coffee (I figure that it's better for the coffee to stick to the gunk on my teeth, after which all of that will be brushed off with a SoniCare toothbrush). I only floss a few days a week or if I can feel there's something stuck between my teefers. I use a baking soda rinse (1/2 tsp in 1 oz water) in lieu of tooth paste. I will occasionally use a fluoride paste (MI Paste with Recaldent) that I smear on my front teeth. Only because I have to wear a mouth guard for night grinding/clenching and this leaves my upper incisors partially exposed to the air. Leaving your teeth exposed to the air all night can make them prone to cavities and erosion. Listerine is way too harsh IMO. That alcohol may be killing off bacteria, but it's also drying out your mouth. |

I make my own toothpaste and it remineralizes your teeth at the same time! I take as much Diatomaceous earth as I want, then slowly add in just a little filterered water to get the consistency that I want, you can also mix in coconut oil as an additional benefit(its antibacterial and is great for you teeth). I also add around 10-20 drops of organic wintergreen essential oil for that great taste and leaves your mouth super fresh! Some ppl cant use Diatomaceous earth because it can be abrasive, but you just need to make sure to get super fine food grade Diatomaceous earth. |

I brush my teeth mainly in the mornings. Never had any problem associated with that. Sometimes I brush before going to bed. I dont use sodium bicarb or anything like that, and usually people only say bad things about my breath when I'm IFing :/ |

I think if you want to care your proper teeth then brush your teeth daily and before going to sleep you should brush your teeth again. |
