This message is for the quilt (or anyone else whom can answer and I apologize for the highjack of an earlier thread). I am assuming you live in the FL area being you spoke with Dr.Baunam personally. I am set for an appointment with Dr Baunam soon (female hair loss) but don't want to waist my money if he is not up to date with his science. Do you have recommendations for a doctor more knowledgeable in female premature hair loss as as well as a holistic physician? Thanks
p.s. I have gone Paleo with notable difference to athletic performance but no improvement to hair. In fact it is worse. I am pretty certain this is a hormonal issue from 10 years of overtraining/undereating.
I think recommendations to gain more weight when you're at a perfectly normal (assuming your body fat levels aren't low) BMI at say 5'7" and 130 lbs are ridiculous.
My general advice to any woman with these types hormonal issues is to AVOID VLC. I came into paleo much like Nudge, fresh of a disastrous stint as a vegetarian and with all kinds of hormonal issues, but not amenorrhea (however, I have been weight stable within 10 lbs since I was 14, and never exercised much). For some reason I went VLC and while it helped some of my issues, it didn't improve others, or even made them worse. I think I lost more hair on VLC than I did as a vegan. :/
Ketosis is a stress to the body, and when your system is already too stressed to maintain a menstrual cycle, I think the focus should be different much different than a paleo diet designed for fat loss, etc.
I started noticing hair loss when I started supplementing with Vitamin D3 along with fish oil. (I'd been taking the fish oil for several years). I stopped both supplements and my hair stopped falling out. I'll be interested in what Dr. Baunam tells you.
I had chronic telogen effluvium (diffuse hair loss involving hairs shedding out at short lengths, not balding) which started when I was vegetarian/vegan, continued and maybe even worsened as I tried low-carb paleo, and has finally stopped now that I eat a whole-foods paleo-style diet with plenty of starch. I might be able to grow my hair long again, woo hoo! The Perfect Health Diet blog has mentioned hair loss associated with VLC diets...
Thanks for all of the replies. I did see Dr. Baunam and he was very kind, the staff was great and well, the science wasn't there. In fact, I mentioned that I was not interested in a transplant or putting chemicals on my head but was hoping to finally get a diagnoses, as I have already been to 5 doctors telling me 5 different things. His reply was that I really needed an endocrinologist or ob gyn to check my hormones, blood but did say I have female pattern thinning. (generic statement) Again, super kind and definitely NOT pushy with his products. Bauman thinks monoxodil and his lazer cap ($3000) could really help. In addition, the group measured the density of the hair to provide a base line when I go back in 3 months.
I am disappointed that I didn't get a diagnosis but have faith if I train less intense, eat more, rest more and continue a Paleo life I might stop/reverse the hair loss.
Hi Flip - i was wondering how you were going in your hormonal recovery? I am 26 and through stress/exercise/quick weight loss (4 stone in a year) have been suffering with amenorrhea for the best part of 3 years. I am not underweight (although i was when i first lost my periods), and have been back at a healthy weight/diet for 2 years although my amenorrhea has not changed. I too have hair loss issues, which seem to have got worse since i have followed a paleo diet (which i have been doing for 2 months now). before then i was vegetarian for a year which gave me various health issues which were the reason why i found out about the benefits of paleo etc and thus switched. I have seen doctors who have done full hormone/blood checks - the outcome is always 'yes, your levels are a little low but nothing to worry about - im sure if you put more weight on it'll sort itself out'. i am 5,7" and 130 lbs - this doesnt seem underweight at all to me, and i dont see why i should have to gain a load of weight that will only make me unhappy...i no longer exercise excessively (i haven't for a long time - only walking/yoga now). apart from hair loss, i have no other negative effects since switching to a paleo diet, and totally believe this is the best way to eat and live. i eat 10% carb/20% protein/70% fat and am very happy with this ratio. I just want to see my hair loss/amenorrhea improve...i was wondering if you had any info/advise you could share on your own experience?
