I like to enjoy a few alcoholic drinks on the weekends. I have been doing NorCal Margaritas for a couple months. I was just wondering if anyone has played around with other Paleo alcoholic beverages???

I have some below that I like plain or liquored up for in-home or taken to parties. I gave the booze options that will work best. You literally can puree any fruit, add an aromatic, cut with a little water and add booze or seltzer to most anything to make a tasty beverage. Pineapple with mint, macerate berries with citrus and use the juice, etc.

  • Watermelon, peeled, seeded and chopped into chunks, mint leaves, water, lime juice

Puree the watermelon, mint and water. Strain into a pitcher using cheesecloth, buttercloth or a chinoise. Add lime juice. Stir it up. Good plain or with vodka

  • Lemon juice, mint muddled together then topped with ice and seltzer. Good with vodka or gin

  • Strawberries, water, lime juice, jalapeno, ice. Blend all together. Good with tequila or vodka

  • Green tea, mint or shiso, lime juice, muddled together then add ice. This is one of my favourites to just drink without booze and add seltzer. It's tasty with vodka but if you want to go balls out then use rum - it's kind of like a mojito.

I should note that, well, rye whiskey with some ice or with ice and topped with seltzer is a damn fine drinkie on a hot day as is a glass of rose filled with ice in a double highball :)

some of those sound really good, but I don't want to put that much work into it. – PKN Jul 22 2011 at 17:00
This is exactly my strategy too. I'll add some other recipes I'm a fan of... – stephthegeek Jul 22 2011 at 17:15

PKN, it's worth the effort. Until someone smart starts bottling paleo alcohol drinks it's definitely worth the time investment. – Nutritionator Jul 22 2011 at 17:20

If you have the $$ PKN, buying the fruit all prepped and ready will make any of these uber fast to make. I've done that when I've been pinched for time and it's aces. I like the prep part tho.. it's soothing and I can take bites as I go :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 22 2011 at 17:34

I rarely drink mixed drinks (usually a good bear or glass of red wine kind of guy) but when I do, it's a "Tan" Russian.

Swapping Kahlua for Patron XO Cafe cuts the sugar, coconut milk replaces milk, and Grey Goose replaces plastic jug vodka.

I enjoy mixing full fat canned coconut milk (both with or sans lime juice) with tequila or rum. Coconut = good with everything. http://paleograd.blogspot.com/2011/06/tequila-cream-soda.html

Gin and tonics are getting me through my beerless depression. Especially during these hot summer months.

can you suggest some tonic that isn't horrifically sweet? sans corn/chemicals? – g. Jul 22 2011 at 17:28
The only tonic to by is Q Tonic. Just pulled a bottle out of my fridge and ingredients are: Triple Purified Water, Organic Agave, Natural Bitters, Handpicked Quinine, Lemon Juice Extract. They're the only ones who carbonate using the Champagne method so you get really nice tight bubbles. Super low glycemic rating and it's not very sweet at all. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 22 2011 at 17:54
Gah! IMO it is! Oopsies.. :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 22 2011 at 18:09
Should have been more specific, I use club soda most of the time just to avoid the sugar in tonic water. If I really want a little sweet I'll add my own sugar and mix it up, you're right, most tonics are over sweetened. And thanks juba, I've never heard of the Q. Tonic but only 7g carbs per 5 oz. isn't bad at all. Gonna pick some of that up as soon as I can find it. Where do you get yours? – Nutritionator Jul 22 2011 at 18:10
Seltzer is my jam, I use a Soda Stream as I can control the bubbles, and keep the Q in the fridge for friends but was eyeballing today as "feels like 113" and a g+t with lime and a ton of ice was sounding pretty damn stellar. Q is at Whole Foods here in NY, pretty much any packy and some liquor stores. I bet the site will have a "where to buy" section for your area tho.. Cheers! – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 23 2011 at 1:23

I am finally giving up beer, i have been on the Nor-cal Margaritas this week myself.

I like vodka and diet (not light, but diet) cranberry juice occasionally too, no carb, low sugar, but regualr Vodka might be grain based? but maybe there is potato vodka out there? not sure of all this.

I used to drink rum and limeade in the summer, but the frozen limeade is loaded with sugar, I wonder if there is a no sugar way to do this?

heineken ain't gluten free. – g. Jul 22 2011 at 17:29
@grenadine is right - it's super low in gluten but not 100%, people will still react if they're super sensitive. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 22 2011 at 18:01

The strategy jesuisjuba laid out is awesome. Here are a few combinations I've been enjoying lately:

  • Blanco tequila, grapefruit juice, muddled cilantro
  • Moscow mule or gin gin mule: same as the recipes out there just skip the simple syrup and go light on a strong ginger beer
  • White lady: gin, grand marnier (fyi, in descending order of amount of sugar: triple sec, cointreau, aperol, campari, grand marnier), lemon juice
  • Vesper martini
  • Variations on the nor cal margarita, try different low sugar fruit juices
  • Gimlets, rickeys, mojitos, and collins also totally work without the added sugar

Experiment with herbs and flavour extracts too!

This book has a fantastic chart of alcohols and flavour pairings, including focusing on ingredients in season: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RWS44M/ref=kinw_myk_ro_title

nice list! if you like grapefruit juice you should try: grapefruit juice, a small hit of luxardo, gin. low sugar and tasty tasty. i try to keep seasonal with my fruit and these buddies are always best in the winter :) would be damn fine in summer tho.. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 22 2011 at 17:59

For lazy no-prep summer refreshment i'm a fan of (cheap) wine + bubbly water, on ice. (a.k.a. 'spritzer') Lemon or lime twist and/or splash of fancy liqueur if they're around are bonus. I used to be really into homemade sangria, now I just cut to the chase.

I have found that if you buy a quality tequila, it is very easy to drink straight (and no, I'm not talking about shots, I'm talking about as a sipping dink).

There is a world of difference between Jose Cuervo and a quality 100% agave brand like 1800 (which is not really that much more expensive). I found the Jose Cuervo to be almost undrinkable straight, while the 1800 silver enjoyable and easy to drink straight.
