I just came back from a small walk around my neighborhood to hang fliers (I have a moving sale on Sunday). I put on my pair of classics and I actually was getting burn! I was avoiding any pavements, but even the hot ground I could feel with only limited protection. I had to do a second, shorter run, and I put my komodos, which gave me much better protection but I am not sure what it would be like after a longer walk.

When I was buying my Bikilas, a woman in the store told me that when she was on some 5k or such there was a woman in Bikilas which MELTED on the hot asphalt surface.

Any experience with heat protection? Anyone had such extreme, melting action?

Have you had other experiences when FiveFingers (all or a particular kind) where they gave not enough protection or even were risky to use?

I wore my Sprints all day on asphalt on a hot day in July in SoCal last year. By the middle of the day, I could tell it was a bad choice. I was overheating from the bottom up!!

I don't think there's much "protection" for this. Just wear thicker soles.

I wore my KSOs on a sandy part of the trail leading out of the Subway route near Zion National Park in Utah last September. The sand was incredibly hot, and I couldn't stand on the sand for more than two or three seconds without the soles of my feet burning. I ended up hopping from foot to foot and hurrying back to the car. When I came back the next day to do the full Subway route, you can bet the KSOs stayed in the hotel room.

I have Bikilas and have no problem at all. I run, walk and crossfit in 100 degrees in NC.

That's fascinating. I've never had this problem with my KSOs.

When I tried on brand-new KSOs, I realized how thin mine were in comparison. Mine are an ancient brown-on-brown, worn down to the equivalent of rubber dishwashing gloves on the soles. They were already thin when new, thinner than the current incarnation of KSOs. – barefeet Jul 23 2011 at 9:51
I bought mine in Spring 2010, so I'm not sure which incarnation that is. – Ambimorph Jul 23 2011 at 14:24
