Is it frustrating or pleasing that you have used up all your 'say' for the day?

Aaaaaand, I'm out of votes, myself! – Adam Crafter Jul 25 2011 at 22:02

@Bree, I believe the website runs on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is about 4 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time ( wwp.greenwichmeantime.com ). So the next day on PaleoHacks starts at midnight GMT, and your votes are reset at this time. – Ed Jul 25 2011 at 23:17

Regarding the vote cap, I believe the max is 25 votes per day, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. – Ed Jul 25 2011 at 23:28

My new goal is to max out every day. Why not? You still have to use them judiciously as you don't get that many. I don't know how many you get actually, but I just got notified (at 2:30 my time) that I only have 5 votes left for the day so it can't be that many.

Maybe our "upvote" practice is a microcosm for how much positive feedback we each provide to the people out there in our real lives. It doesn't come naturally to give someone a compliment or say something nice, some sort of positive acknowledgment. But there are lots of positive things that you could say to each and every person in your life each and every day. We focus so much on what our friends, coworkers, and family members do that isn't perfect in our eyes -- but there's just as much, if not more, that is admirable and commendable.

I've been making an effort in recent years to not only note in my mind the admirable and commendable things the people around me are doing and saying, but also speak out to let the person know that I appreciated it. That second part feels so unnatural at first, but it is so easy to find things to comment positively on -- especially if you include the little tiny things like you like someone's shoes or style, or something they cooked, something they did like take out the trash or bring you a glass of water.

Edit: And it feels REALLY good to see the look on the person's face when they hear what you have to say. Because people don't compliment often enough, people don't hear compliments often enough, and when they do get one it's like a shiny little piece of gold. It's cliche but the more you see this look (or just get the positive feeling of gratitude back from them) the more you want to speak up, the less unnatural it feels to do it.

There's an endless supply of nice things to say to people -- GENUINELY. I'm not advocating flattery, which is different and unhealthy.

I think we don't say nice things or compliment people very often -- I'm still talking generally here -- because we think that they are already full of themselves and we don't want to make their heads even bigger. But we're wrong most of the time. Most people are not full of themselves no matter how much they may seem to be so. Most of us feel at least a little insecure and unsure of whether we look good, are saying smart or dumb things, are appreciated, etc. There is almost nobody in the world whose head will actually get too big with too much positive feedback. I bet that the people who seem most annoying, most full of themselves, would actually chill out and be less annoying if they did get enough positive feedback to reassure them that there's no need to overcompensate. There's almost no such thing as too much positive feedback.

This is particularly the case for children. There is no such thing as too much positive feedback for our kids. Okay that's totally off point but I wanted to say it anyway.

Update: just reached my limit for the day after upvoting some of the awesome entries in this thread! – Pale-O-Girl Jul 25 2011 at 21:41

you are so right. a few years back, i vowed to say all the nice things i was thinking about strangers. you know, im in line at the bank or something and i just say to the person in front of me, "nice sweater." if im thinking it, why not say it out loud? whenever i do it, the other person is clearly happy and i always get a nice, "thank you" and a smile. i live in boston where people have a tendency to be quite cold and abrasive. it makes me happy to see other people feeling good, and i know when it happens to me, it makes my day. – being Jul 25 2011 at 22:06
I tried to upvote your answer, but I don't have any votes left today. I like giving up votes. It's like giving folks a smile and wishing them a lovely day. :) – PaleoGran Feb 28 2012 at 17:43

I like hitting the daily cap. I think that the more up-votes people get the more likely they are to add more to the conversations. Everyone needs some paleo-cheerleaders!

It's pleasing!

I sometimes feel that I don't upvote enough. It's pretty cool that someone would take the time to weigh in on an anonymous question to help someone they've never met. Part of this can be attributed to distracting oneself from the drudgeries of work/school/whatever. But I prefer to think that we paleohackers are more altruistic than average. There have been some very well thought out questions and answers on paleohacks. The voting system provides incentive for high-quality questions and answers, and should be lauded. Three cheers for voting! Hip hop hooray, ho, hey. Hold on, that might be Naughty By Nature...

i agree. i try and upvote everyone who answers my questions, even if its not necessarily what i want to hear, just to show that i appreciate the fact that they took the time to help me out. i really do appreciate everyones help. – being Jul 25 2011 at 22:08

I happily run out sometimes, and am maybe a little sad, but wouldn't quite put it in the realm of frustrating. You can always go back later. To me, it usually means that i've spent waaaay too much time on PH for the day and i take it as a reminder that it might be time to step_away from the glowing machine. heh.

frankly, btw, i don't think people use voting enough at all! i can't figure it out. i love giving props to answers i think are thoughtful or helpful or make a good point! why not?? It's so disappointing to see perfectly smart answers languish there with a 1 or a 2, while some smartass (like me, sometimes) gets a bigger handful - it ain't right, people! upvote 'em all!! you don't need to pick just one answer per page, fercryingoutloud.

also i kinda think if someone answers your question earnestly, maybe you could give them a measly click, just for taking the time? sometimes i upvote answers with zeros just to say hey, look, hi, someone out here read this, thanks for participating - espesh when it becomes clear the asker isn't going to!

oh my god, excellent points. i feel like an asshole! i would reply to everyone who would comment on my questions and do the "accept" plus the upvotes but for some reason thought i only had a few each day. just went through to make sure everyone who answered anything of mine have clicks and upvotes. yay! – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 26 2011 at 0:38

I think I will make it a goal to run out more often. I only see it as a positive for the PaleoHacks community!

Plus one.........I run out a lot of times – The Quilt Jul 25 2011 at 21:24
Jk did you see the VAP blog......? Thought you might like it. I had your numbers in mind when I wrote it – The Quilt Jul 25 2011 at 21:25
heading over there now to check it out! – Jack Kronk Jul 25 2011 at 21:33
This will explain to you why I am concerned and why you need to think things through. – The Quilt Jul 25 2011 at 22:41

Doc - that sort of implies that I am not taking things seriously or something. I'm reasonably certain that you don't intend to say it in a demeaning way, but nonetheless, your delivery there just seems odd to me. I mean, you can't really think that. It ought to be fairly clear that I am thinking things through. My long winded, highly informative, transparently open and honest approach to my asking for help regarding my lab results proves that, right? Anyway, thanks for heads up about the VAP write up. I enjoyed reading it. – Jack Kronk Jul 26 2011 at 0:31

I didn't know there was a limit! I try to up vote as often as I can because the good advice and creative ideas are awesome!!

I have never even come close to running out of votes. Does this mean I am a stingy voter? I am usually looking for something new, unique, helpful, or well thought out. Maybe I should loosen up a bit. Sometimes I think if I give out too many votes, they won't be worth as much. Like a supply and demand issue. How dumb is that?

i've hit it a few times, but i can't remember! 20?? a warning pops up every time you vote once you get within 10. or something like that.. it's been a while, i'm gonna push it today an find out! :) – g. Jul 25 2011 at 20:48

No wonder no one has yet "Hit the daily reputation cap on 150 days" (legendary: gold badge) or on 50 days (epic: silver badge). The race is on! I'd always thought that meant a cap on others giving you up-votes.

Wait, that is what it is. Unless I've misunderstood you. You can't get more than 200 points of reputation from other people (bounties are an exception) in a single day -- that's the daily reputation cap. There are no badges for voting except for the silver you get when you reach 300. Beyond that you won't get badges, but you will probably get the adulation of Jack Kronk: paleohacks.com/questions/44017/… – Paul Jul 26 2011 at 7:10

I've only hit that once or twice (mortarboard badge) myself... but with everyone using up their votes, I'm sure it will happen more often... – Adam Crafter Jul 26 2011 at 14:41
Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification, Paul. – John Naruwan Jul 26 2011 at 23:25

Did you know that even after you run out of answer votes for the day, that you can still vote on comments?

I am doomed to never leave paleohacks.

Thanks for the chuckle. I, too, upvote comments a lot. :) – PaleoGran Feb 28 2012 at 17:45

I didn't know there was a limit, either! And now it's my goal to always use them. Thanks for inspiring, Adam.

I just maxed out for the first time on this question! Yay! :) Didn't realize I had so many either. Now I have a new daily quest.
