I will be staying at a hostel while in LA for the AHS. I pretty much normally make all my own food because I don't trust restaurants/stores. I know most hostels have a community kitchen but the AHS starts early and I'll only be in town for a couple of days so I don't want to buy many groceries/cook. How are you guys handling this? Does anyone who lives in LA know if there are whole foods/mothers markets around the UCLA area where I can pick up coffee and breakfast at least? Will there be food available at the AHS or time to go off campus and get lunch or do we need to bring our own with us? I'm interested to hear how other people will be dealing with this. Thanks!

WF food bars are not good. All foods supplied by sysco. Neolithic ingredients. – The Quilt Jul 27 2011 at 0:30

WF hot bar freeeaks me out. My friend once found a roach in her food from their hot bar. I can at least get produce to munch on. – Danielle Jul 27 2011 at 0:38

Yes.....my BIL works for shack and delivers to all the WF stores in three states. When he told me this I wrote a letter to WF CEO to complain. Never got a reply – The Quilt Jul 27 2011 at 23:01

One possibility that I've been debating is skipping breakfast and lunch, and then feasting at dinner. So two days of IF-ing. Perhaps I am F-ing crazy to think I can pull that off, but that's how I roll.

Actually I will probably crotch a fifth and have a bag of...oh this isn't a concert and I'm not 18 anymore.

Seriously, I'm gonna try some extended fasting.

Wait - this is supposed to be the Woodstock of Evolutionary Medicine. Now I feel that I must get baked or I will be compromising the spirit of the event. What say you Danielle - paleohacks.com/questions/34903/… – Aravind Jul 27 2011 at 0:58

I can throw some weed into my almond muffins and bring plenty to share. Just saying. – Shari Bambino Jul 27 2011 at 1:03

Almonds - PUFA's too high. We'll just eat the weed raw. Then we can say we are Denise Minger students – Aravind Jul 27 2011 at 1:11

What if we did a little trading post? Everyone bring a 5-10 paleo snack small ziploc baggies and we could have a food swap?

I'm bringing homemade jerky, going to whole foods for a few things and will probably hit up some of the local restaurants.

Speaking of, here's some local restaurants I found on the AHS facebook page and reproduced here (without permission):

"Walking distance: Whole foods- $$- Grocery and Prepared foods- Gayley and Weyburn. Located directly off campus in Westwood Village. Free parking while shopping.

Mongols- $- Mongolian BBQ- 1064 Gayley - Pile as much meat, veggies, and noodles you can into a bowl and hand it to the cook to grill it up--all for about 9 bucks. http://www.yelp.com/biz/mongols-los-angeles

In-n-out burger- $- Burgers- 922 Gayley- Get a California classic just steps off campus. Burgers, fries, and shakes. Make your burger paleo and ask to get your burger protein style with a lettuce wrap instead of the bun.

Damon and Pythias- $$- 1061 Broxton Ave- New American Grill- the carnivore plate offers three meats for 15 bucks. Great garlic fries for a carb-indulgence.

Driving distance--

Nook Bistro- $- New American- 11628 Santa Monica Blvd 9 (b/t Barry Ave & Federal Ave)-- Nestled in the corner of a nondescript strip mall, Nook serves up Southern comfort food meets LA Farmers market faire. Entrees between $12 and $25 and great wine/beer selection. http://nookbistro.com/

Tofuya BBQ--Korean BBQ--$$-- 11267 National Blvd-- All-you-can-eat meat, tofu soup, and kimchi for $17. Grill your own meat at the table. http://www.yelp.com/biz/tofuya-bbq-los-angeles

Hide Sushi--Sushi-$$- Cash only-2040 Sawtelle Blvd-- Located in a small village of japanese and Korean shops and restaurants. Hide Sushi (pronounces hee-day) serves up the freshest sushi on the Westside without shelling out the big bucks. http://www.hidesushi.com/ "

I plan on scavenging from the coolers of fellow attendees.

If that doesn't pan out, I'll IF through breakfast, eat out for lunch and dinner, and maybe bring some cured meat and freeze-dried mangoes to snack on.

here's a map from Urbanspoon on what is close to UCLA. Bristol Farms is just down the way, but I don't think they open until later.

There are Trader Joe's relatively closeby, but again, most don't open until later.

I can't recall what time Jerry's deli opens, and while yes it is overrated, it is in the thick of UCLA, and if you get enough breakfast in you, I don't think you'll need a lunch.

Oh, and for sure there's a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf close by. There used to be a Peets or a Starbucks, but cannot recall if they are still there. All are walking distance.

I've been wondering the same thing. I am staying at a hotel nearby so I'm hoping there will be some sort of breakfast available to me. I'm going to make some almond meal muffins and bring some macadamia nuts, canned sardines and instant coffee (gag) with me. Maybe a few larabars too. I can't be without "my food" or I panic, lol. I am assuming there will be lunch options for us on campus or nearby. There is a long lunch break so there should be time and I'm hoping they will have suggestions for us.

Good idea- I'm going to bring some muffins too! – Jules K Jul 27 2011 at 0:36
Have you tried Starbucks Via? It's pretty good if instant coffee is your only option. – mindi Jul 27 2011 at 0:36
Yes that's what I'm bringing. It's pretty good. No cream though. That makes me want to cry. I'm going to attempt to dehydrate some to bring with me. We'll see, lol. – Shari Bambino Jul 27 2011 at 0:43

Almost all hotels/motels have coffee makers or coffee in the lobby. – Harry Jul 27 2011 at 19:59

I know they have an hour lunch break, but I'm prob going to bring an insulated lunch bag so I can stick around and gawk at the paleo-celebs that could be milling about :) Looks like I'm screwed for breakfast- I was happy to see my hotel serves breakfast, but according to the reviews online, it's just bagels! :(

I'm arriving mid afternoon Thursday. My plan is to scope the neighborhood. Maybe pick up some stuff at WF for breakfast and lunch.

That's what I'm thinking too. I arrive wednesday – Danielle Jul 27 2011 at 21:18
I'm getting in on the third.....got an interview at Disney to do and then I will scope the area. I got some friends who live in southern Cali coming to drink some wine so I know I will need stinky French cheese! – The Quilt Jul 27 2011 at 23:30
I am staying at the Royal Palace Westwood. Supposedly, there will be a mini-fridge, microwave, TJs a block away and WF 2 blocks. I think I should be fine. – Harry Aug 1 2011 at 4:24

I still don't have anyone to have dinner with tomorrow night (Thursday). Do I really have to go eat at the wicked WF food bar all by myself???

I'm so sorry. I actually tried to move my dinner but I couldn't make it work. – Aravind Aug 4 2011 at 1:06
It's o.k. You have a good excuse so I forgive you. I think the rest of the bunch are just ignoring me. – Shari Bambino Aug 4 2011 at 1:32
I'm getting in real late on Thursday Shari. Hope that's a good excuse too. Look out for the canola oil at the WF hot bar! – Paul Aug 4 2011 at 2:16
Awww, it's o.k. I've emailed a friend who lives there to see if she wants to meet up. Otherwise I'm going to drown my sorrows in canola poison. I might even buy cookies to soothe my lonely heart, lol. – Shari Bambino Aug 4 2011 at 2:47
My friend is going to meet me for dinner so you don't have to listen to me whine anymore. I'm good. – Shari Bambino Aug 4 2011 at 16:49
