So i just finished the Whole30, and i went on a bit of a binge over the weekend. My partner and i went wine tasting and stayed at a nice cottage in the country. Anyway, the paleo diet went out of the window, and the whole 30 got blown out away. Breakfast on Saturday was a pie and sausage roll, lunch was paleo-ish, dinner was a schnitzel. Sunday was fairly normal food, just with some cheese, which i haven't eaten for a month.

Anyway, Monday and i have real bad stomach pains. Tuesday to Thursday off work. 2 doctors have both told me that I have acid problems, which i have never had before.

Everything i read on google is saying that hyper acidity is normally caused by fatty or spicy foods.

Has anyone else suffered from hyper acidity? If so any solutions.

I have had to take a nearly a week off work it's that bad.

Could it be from eating so well and eating shitty food?

Cheers all.

I am so sorry to hear this! I have had acid problems for a few years which I had to take some pretty strong medication for.

Since going Paleo though I haven't had acid reflux/pain at all except for once when, similar to you, I had a lot of foods I'd not had in a while and drank a lot of beer.

My thoughts are that your body reacted to the foods you've not eaten in a while. If your Dr. is happy that no long term damage is done then maybe look at this as a reminder of why you went Paleo in the first place.

I've noticed that when I eat healthy for awhile and then go back to eating unhealthy foods, the unhealthy foods seem to hit me much harder than they did before I started eating healthy. My guess is that over time the body gets used to compensating for the negative effects of unhealthy foods--like focusing more of its resources on reducing stomach acid, for example--so you don't notice them so much, or at all. But if you stop eating those bad foods, then your body stops compensating for them, just because it's unneccesary. When you go back to eating badly, your body can't handle it, and you get slammed with the full effects of whatever it is you're eating. Do you see what I'm saying here? I've had similar experiences as what you're talking about, and that's how I've interpreted them. (and if I were having problems with stomach acid, I'd eat some good quality yogurt).

Your exact problem is what convinced me to go from flexible WAPF to paleo. I find that my Biggest triggers are vegetable oils, unsoaked legumes, and processed cow cheese. I dont tend To have issues with raw sheep or goat cheese, or cultured goat products. I'd stay away from the NAD and look for Paleo "cheat" food equivalents for the once or twice a month indulgence.

Oh and I found kombucha to be really helpful in the early days when I had acid reflux flare ups. The combination of the acid and the probiotics really really helped calm my tummy down. Dairy (even cultured) would make it worse. – Aughra Jul 28 2011 at 19:29
Thanks BV. I normally don't really cheat at all. I find paleo good enough that i don't feel the need to cheat, and me and the GF are both pretty handy in the kitchen which helps. When you are away in a little country town its a bit harder, and i thought a couple of days wont hurt. yeah, i was wrong. I did have cheese which i haven't eaten in a month because of the whole30. I so hope it's not cheese, because i do like cheese :( – peter Jul 28 2011 at 22:42

well wine and cheese are a especially painful combination as the wine slows your digestion. I know it totally sucks because cheese and wine go together like, well... cheese and wine. Good luck! – Aughra Jul 29 2011 at 2:46
