how to gain weight on paleo?

I am mexican, 33 years old, used to eat lots of fast carbs, lots of bread, pasta, rice, and saturated fat of the mexican traditional food, suffered hypertension 140/110, fatigue, anxiety due to reactive hypoglicemia, I suffered severe bloating, belching, gases and chest pain. I used to exercise every day but I ended up crashed due to low glucose levels. I tried DASH diet for 6 months but it did not work.

I was diagnosed with insulin resistance.

I went paleo on February 2011, and now my BP is 120/80, I have no gastric problems, and consider all issues solved.

I was 60 kilos in January but now I am 52 kilos and my body fat % is 8.3. All I can add is I probably have celiac disease but I tolerate milk and some low fat dairy products. I eat 4 to 5 times a day, protein in every meal, lots of lean meat, salmon, white fish, chichen breast, lots of fruits and vegetables. Totally gave up rice, bread, pasta, candy, sugar, etc.

Besides training (weight lifiting) is there a proven way to gain weihgt with nutrition? Do not forget I must keep insulin sensitivity and avoid sudden increases in blood glucose...

thank you all...

Hi, Victor. 8.3 % body fat is low for most men, but it's not a harmfully low amount. I wouldn't worry about it, especially since your overall health has improved so much on paleo in just few months.

One of the symptoms of celiac is weight loss, and trouble gaining weight. This is due to damage to the intestine, which can prevent you from getting all the nutrition from your food. This damage can take years to heal after removing gluten from the diet, and while it MAY heal faster on a paleo diet, it will probably still take quite a while.

Good luck!

thank you, I will take that into consideration, I was not officially diagnosed with celiac disease but when I was reading Robb Wolff I felt identified with everything in his book, – victor Jul 29 2011 at 2:27

Not sure how much your eating per day and your caloric breakdown. I would be interested in seeing the breakdown. Paleo and dairy are not friends you need to cut that out completely as you'll get all the calcium you need on the Paleo diet. Putting on weight should only be in the form of muscle so you should be aiming for at least 250 g protein 60g fat and 100 g carbs from good sources.this is only a reference a will change by person. Check out Robb Wolffs book and Lorain Cordain for more in-depth knowledge. They are legends in this field. Training with weights only as cardio for long periods increase cortisol not good for you gringo. Let me know your thoughts on this Ray

honestly I don´t really know how much I eat per day, I just try to eat as much and as healthy as I can, I have not cut milk (lactose free and low fat)cause it helps me a lot with milkshakes I have between heavy meals. I´ll consider your tips on the amounts of protein, fat and carbs. I have adapted the paleo diet to the food available here in Mexico. I must say I have and advantage because fruits and vegetables are really cheap, fresh and ok. I felt crashed after 1hr routine in the gym, doing cardio and weight lifting but now i do quick, short intense routines, exercise a la paleo – victor Jul 29 2011 at 2:35
If you are able to eat fruit, how about trying some healthy carbs from sweet potatoes? Get them in within 30 minutes of your workout if you can. – Annie Jul 29 2011 at 4:37
