I've been no-(sham)poo for awhile now. But I've always had trouble with cleaning my boar bristle brush. After I clean it and wait for it to dry, it seems good as new but right after a single brush stroke it's disgusting again (really oily with dusty hair bits). I don't think I have dandruff and my SO thinks my hair smells good. It is also a pain to wash it after every single brush to the point I don't really use it anymore. Anyone know a good way to clean it? Thanks.

I was told that you are supposed to have a second brush to bush the boar brush with. That is what I do. I have a cheap plastic/normal brush that i use.. i just brush it up down and sideways.. then turn it upside down and rub/flick it to get any tiny things i missed.

I am no poo too.. noting but water and occasionally if there is a ton of build up a bar of oil soap.. i found that just washing really well with water and brushing with my plastic brush in the shower helps get out all that gunk that has built up in the hair..

are you using full boar or is it a mix of boar and plastic bristles? i use mason pearson boar bristle brushes and outside of dry cleaning it pretty frequently with the occasional wash, it stays in nice condition. i wash my hair about twice a week - rinse really well and scrub with fingers on off days, especially after a big workout.

hhmm... how are you currently cleaning it? with my mp there are super specific rules on how to take care of it and if followed the brush can last for years, my latest i've had for 4. here, take a peep at their cleaning instructions and see if that helps you out at all: http://www.masonpearson.com/main.html

i wonder if just a daily dry clean will keep it in the condition you're looking for..

hmm I was dry cleaning it just by flicking it with a stick like object till the debris falls out, then also patting it in case some was still stuck. but it seems after one comb it's completely disgusting again, even though i'm doing it on clean hair or whatever :/ but it was really cheap, like $8--maybe that is why? – xue Jul 31 2011 at 21:24
use a comb to pull loose hairs out and take a 2nd soft brush and work it along the bristles. you definitely get better quality the more you spend but try to work with this one if you can. definitely check out the mason pearson site for maintenance.. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Aug 1 2011 at 2:11

You can use a come to comb out the hair and debris after each use. Hold brush in one handle comb at 90 degrees to the brush. Comb through until there is no more hair.

there's not really any more hair...it just still has a lot of small scalpy bits and oil. maybe my brush is just not good quality? (it was pretty cheap) – xue Jul 31 2011 at 21:22
