Soo I have several jars of kombucha I made almost a year ago. I stored them in the fridge (though recently my roommate said I should get rid of my 'pets' and so they've been sitting outside for almost a week now (in mason jars)). They don't look contaminated (no greenish/weird colored mold), but most smell strongly of yeast in a not good way, even when they were in the fridge. If anyone has worked in a fly lab, it smells strongly like the fly food (which I think is brewer's yeast??) and made me nauseous thinking about that. Should I just chuck them? I feel bad since I've stored several mothers in some of the containers, and they still look as they did a year ago, really thick and healthy :/ Should I just start with new SCOBYs? Are they contaminated with 'wild yeast' or other random bacteria I can't see? Thanks.
I brewed my own Kombucha prior to getting married (my wife vetoed moving in with the SCOBYs), so I can relate to not wanting to throw them away.
My suggestion would be, brew up a fresh batch of sweet tea (whatever recipe you use), and put the best looking mothers (I know this sounds funny, but if you make kombucha you know what I'm saying) in with clean jars.
As the tea matures, see if the smell is still "off" and if so, your best bet is to start from scratch with new SCOBYs. You don't want to risk making yourself sick, so err on the side of caution.
