I'm using a coconut-derived one, but it doesn't clean the dishes very well. Does anyone have a good recipe or suggestion for a more natural-ish soap for the dishwasher? Thanks!

Soaps don't work in dishwashers. In this case, you'll need to use a detergent. – Karen Jul 31 2011 at 12:04

For hand dish-washing I've had good luck w/ Dr. Bronners, but you do need to scrape/wipe the fat off dishes first. – Karen Jul 31 2011 at 13:42

At the moment I'm using Palmolive Eco. I'm sure I could do better, but I needed something quick and this was the best of the selection I had in front of me at the time.

Get a better dishwasher. It's been my experience that the quality of the dishwasher has more to do with cleaning the dishes than soap. When the phosphates were removed from our favorite brand, our dishwasher quit cleaning the dishes. About a month later, the dishwasher broke and my wife wanted the super duper ultra deluxe model. We bought it and the dishes were sparkling with less than half the amount of the crappy soap.

What's your brand/recipe - I'll mix some up and wash a load and see how it works.

As someone who has lived in a lot of apartments over the years - I totally agree with mth here. It has a lot to do with the machine. In fact after such horrible results with most of the dishwashers I've had available to me that I've gotten in the habit of just washing by hand and use the dishwasher as a drying rack instead most often. I do have a good dishwasher now and on the rare occasion that I do use it, Mrs. Meyer's Dishwasher packs or Seventh Generation dishwasher detergent packs and they both work very well. – HeatherC Jul 31 2011 at 13:54

I use the dish liquid and dishwasher detergent on this page: https://erinpatota.norwex.biz/?p=n&sectid=4&cid=5. I've been happy, though I agree that it has lot to do with the dishwasher.
