We know eating organ meat, preferably from a good source is beneficial. Is just adding liver to your diet good enough? Is there a very good reason to go out of your way to get the kidney, heart, brain, intestines and so forth on a monthly basis?

Liver is "good enough". But I think you should make a point of eating all of them if you can. They provide a diverse array of nutrients and you will be better off for it. Spleen provides way too much iron so I don't really think people should eat a lot of spleen, but everything else seems good. Especially brains. http://evolutionarypsychiatry.blogspot.com/2010/08/zombieland.html

Brrrraaaaiinnnss!

nice, and I like the link. Have you ever eaten brains? and from what source? Thats one item I dont think I've ever seen for sale. – JayJay Aug 2 2011 at 19:36
dear stabby raccoon, how do you feel about eating the organs (particularly brains) of CAFO animals? i'm just wondering if you think there is any special considerations with offal, as opposed to muscle meats. – g. Aug 2 2011 at 19:48
I ate them for a while, no longer because, well, I don't like them. Got them from a local farmer, you usually have to know someone with a small herd. The bigger grassfed guys just look at you funny. – Stabby Aug 2 2011 at 19:49
I am always wary of eating CAFO animals. I don't think that CAFO muscle meat is very harmful compared with non-paleo foods, although it's not as good as grass fed. CAFO brains may give your Prion disease. I can't say for sure, but look into it. – Stabby Aug 2 2011 at 19:52
it's grossing me out to think about it. – g. Aug 2 2011 at 23:07

From a nutritional perspective, liver is amazing, it is like a multi-vitamin. According to FitDay, 4oz of fried beef liver has about 6x your RDA of vitamin A, 15x of vitamin B12, 2x of riboflavin (vitamin B2), 8x RDA of copper, full RDA of niacin, and about half your RDA of a few other nutrients. That is just in 4 ounces. One serving nearly takes care of those nutrients for the week (though you could probably go over the RDA and be even healthier).

Brain, kidneys, and other organ meats have a lot of nutrients too, but liver has much higher concentrations. I like organ meats and eat them whenever I can, but from a nutritional perspective, I'd focus on liver. The same goes for chicken liver BTW -- not quite as dense nutritionally, but still very good for you.

Yup liver is good stuff...i've never stopped at 4oz of any food though :D. Last time I had liver it was more like 12oz. – JayJay Aug 2 2011 at 20:00

I have always found ONE organ to be sufficient. However, it might be more fun to have two (or three). There are a lot of pretty girls on Paleohacks.

see...at least this response is logical :) – JayJay Aug 2 2011 at 19:31
Now I'm shocked. I thought you were retired and leave all the good organs to us now? ;-) – MasterB Aug 3 2011 at 6:00
