I'm Indonesian weighed 54kg and 168cm tall.

My daily activity is working in my desk. When I heard that 1.5 liters water is myth, my concern is what about people in tropical country?

If I just measure requirement by pee color say if it has clear looks I'll try reduce water until it's still looking clear. This way I came up with about a liter per day (peed 6-7 times). Personally I disagree with thirst indication as it always too late.

Is there a difference among tropic kidney and cold country kidney?

EDIT: I eat raw fruits (guava, banana, orange, etc) daily and not a coffee drinker

Hi @tono. When I take my cold country kidneys to the tropics I find I usually drink more water due to the heat. Correction, make that liquid, because some it is in the form of beer down there! You are eating a lot of juicy foods in the form of fruit so if you feel good and your pee is light coloured don't worry. – henny Aug 9 2011 at 21:57

From Fibre Menace, p 48:

"A person weighing 70kg [155 lbs] requires at least ca. 1,750 ml [59 oz] water per day. Of this amount ca. 650 ml is obtained by drinking, ca. 750 ml is the water contained in solid food, and ca. 350 ml is oxidation water."

It then notes that 1750ml is ~7.5 glasses, which is rounded up to 8 for '8 glasses a day'. And yes we technically need that amount of water, but only actually need to drink ~2.5 glasses of water. And all liquids count, even tea, soup, etc unlike the stupid 'clear liquids' only rule.

The Merck Manual of Diagnostic and Therapy is quoted as "... a daily intake of 700 to 800 ml is needed to match total water losses and remain in water balance..."

This is from both food and drink.

Your fine if your pee is clear or light yellow and if you don't feel really thirsty. Sounds like you are keeping well hydrated to me! I have lived in a tropical area for a long time and a very cold area for a long time. I drink a lot of water naturally at both places, but because I don't sweat as much in the cold, climate controlled environment I probably drink a little less and pee about the same.

If your pee is clear, then you can cut back on liquid (water, fruit, etc). If your pee is light yellow, it's just right. If your pee is dark yellow and/or cloudy, you need more liquid. If your pee is florescent yellow, you're getting too much vitamin B. And if your pee smells funky, you've been eating asparagus :p – cerement Jan 13 2012 at 18:48
