Carrie Sisson said that she does this (see second to last question): http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dear-carrie-reader-question-roundup/

Is the logic here solid - and should those of us vain about aging still cover up hands, arms, chest, and face to avoid the most obvious places where sun-damage-driven aging occurs?

Yep; I wear a broad-brimmed hat. I beat my face up enough with booze and cigs when I was younger, and I'm trying to play nice with it now. youtube.com/watch?v=QIi139EUzqU – Rose Aug 4 2011 at 21:39

I guess I don't get the point of that. Why not just limit your sun exposure altogther? That sounds kind of like body builders who only work on the muscles they can see in the mirror and then neglect their little chicken legs. Why would you want a pretty face but your arms and legs are all leathery?

The skin on the face is exposed year-round, getting not only sun but wind, pollutants, etc., while the rest of the body usually isn't. A little extra protection while sunbathing makes sense to me. As for why sunbathe at all -- many of us are in buildings all day long and therefore don't make enough Vitamin D, along with whatever other benefits come from sunshine. – Rose Aug 5 2011 at 13:57
Ah, good point! I've spent most of my time - other than the past couple of years - living in warm climates and hadn't really considered that not everyone goes around in shorts year round. – turkeytyme Aug 5 2011 at 16:44

If you can get out of the sun or cover up BEFORE you burn then dont worry about every using sunscreen. If you have no choice than to stay out in the sun, the hats and clothing are better choices.

oh im so bad about this. so bad. i was blessed with some good skin genes, and since im of middle eastern descent, i use that as an excuse to play fast and loose with the sun exposure. which is BAD. but, in the moment it feels so good. i live right at the beach, too and we have such a short summer in new england that i maybe over indulge a bit. i love being tan, but mostly i just love the feel of the sun on my face. i dont really burn except for a bit during the first exposure of the season, so its tempting to just lay in the sun all summer. i know ill pay later. part of me doesnt really care too much- im not super vain in my a-hem "middle-ish age" and fully embrace that im never going to look 16 again, but i still dont want to look like a train wreck, either. do i think its good to shield your face and chest and hands from too much sun damage? absolutely. do i listen to my own advice? yes, but only between october and april. ;)

isnt that what rosehip seed oil is for?

from MRH: This unique oil is extremely high in essential fatty acids and has carried much respect amongst professional journals and organizations as being a great agent in the fight against dry, weathered, and dehydrated skin. It works wonders on scars and is the predominant oil used for treating wrinkles and premature aging. – being Aug 4 2011 at 23:28
I'm with you akd except I'm currently living in Florida - I know I should be covering my face but I rarely do. I'm hoping your rosehip serum will save me! – HeatherC Aug 5 2011 at 3:22

Absolutely cover my face with a broad-brimmed hat! The rest of me can get tan, but NOT MY FACE!! I don't bother covering my chest, arms or hands so much. And for 57, I look pretty good!

What? You've never seen an extreme sun-worshiper over 40 years old? They're the ones with the leather skin. So, yes, tan but don't be a nut about it and cover your face to minimize the leather look.
