I am compiling more Primal/Paleo nutrition info to share with my pregnant clients and am curious if there are any moms on here who had experience with continuing IF during their pregnancy?
Not that I will be recommending IF to my clients, but some have been Primal for awhile, so I know the question will come up.
FYI:I've been successfully IFing (16/8 or 18/6, daily) for 6 months.
With my last pregnancy (my baby is 8 weeks old) I would eat a really big breakfast of bacon and eggs and that would hold me until dinner time. So technically I fasted during lunch. If the mom is eating enough calories and doesn't feel hungry I say eat when you are hungry and if she isn't hungry don't feel like you HAVE to eat. But if the mom is hungry I say don't deprive yourself and baby of nutrients and calories you made need to build healthy strong baby and placenta. My baby and I turned out fine and healthy. She was delivered at 39 weeks weighing 5 lbs 14 oz. I gained 12 lbs my whole pregnancy eating Paleo/VLC and was never hungry.
I would say if a client comes to you asking if she can IF during pregnancy, you should be worried about possible body dysmorphia or eating disorders. If she's just not super hungry and eats to satiety twice a day, that's one thing, but I would be careful advising clients on IF during pregnancy. Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen if something were to go wrong (even unrelated to the fasting). I don't think skipping meals would necessarily hurt the fetus, but it just doesn't sound like a good idea for you to be recommending it.
I am working to become pregnant, and, while I fully intend to remain paleo and watch my carb intake, I have no plans to IF, other than what might happen naturally. If I am too nauseous to eat or I'm busy on something and forget to eat a meal I'm not going to worry about it. No intentional IFing though. To me, that goes into a territory I don't want to go into when I'm pregnant. If my body isn't hungry then I trust it to not steer me wrong. If it's hungry and I'm ignoring that, that sounds like trouble to me.
Studies have shown that babies who were in utero during Ramadan are smaller and have higher than average instances of learning disabilities into adulthood. This effect is increased when Ramadan falls during the summer and the fasting period is longer. I know it isn't precisely the same as a paleo IF but based on this info I would advise against attempting any kind of fast during pregnancy. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-10927611
Hi I'm 24 years old and 8 weeks prego and have been Ifing for about three months I was 130-40 when I started. I now eat from 12-8, i sleep at 12 every night at 140 wake up at 135 very regularly I never really ate a whole bunch before either (800-1200 calories a day with the occasional weekend eat-out). the fasting pretty much cut out late night snacks for my benefit. My mom had gestational diabetes with all three of her kids but also put no restrictions on her food intake. She has type 2 diabetes now and I'm hoping a moderate control of my diet will help me and baby be happy and strong, I have more energy on this diet even with the occasional bouts of extreme tiredness. About every other morning (since my diet, not pregnancy) I'll feeling hungry (not starving) for about an hour before 12. Feeling hungry is healthy in moderation. I would like to keep with the IFing throughout the pregnancy but I'll probably open my window to 11-9 in third trimester. I don't see why a solid consistent eating cycle would be anything but good for a fetus, of course they're on fetus time. Good luck! Please post your findings.
