Alright, it's lunchtime, I was late to work, didn't pack anything so had Albertson's as my only choice to get food. Not a good Albertson's. Here is what I ate :
Fried Chicken Breast from Deli...skin removed.
One small avocado w/2 tsp honey
1/2 cup of blueberries
My question is the chicken. I needed protein, and can't cook anything. Sandwich meats are horrible and have way too many ingredients. Their deli didn't offer any deli meats that didn't look like they had been reshaped into footballs.
The chicken is fried in lard, but I don't know where it's from. Ack.
I honestly don't worry about this kind of stuff. I eat as clean as I can most of the time -- hunted or grass-fed for meat, organic chicken, pastured eggs, etc. -- but I've also eaten deli chicken or fast-food burger patties when up against the wall. If there's truly nothing available (I was at a gathering the other night that had only a pasta bar for food), I consider it an opportunity to toughen my short-term fasting ability, but lard-fried chicken sounds okay to me.
I don't remember which PHer said it, but I'll use their quote: Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
I think you did fine. You did the best you could given a certain situation and that's all you can do. Next time you might want to consider canned sardines or a packet of tuna (I keep sardines in my bag with me at all time for these type of situations) Also, it won't kill you to go without animal protein for a meal. A bag of carrots with some guac, maybe some nuts and fruit can make a nice light lunch.
Sometimes I think we can drive ourselves too crazy with all this "but what can I eat" thinking. I realize it's important to make the best food choices when you can but putting things into perspective and realizing that you can only do what you can do is the best coritsol preventer (for those into the sciency side of it). It sounds like you did just fine, honestly...and i'm guessing after that, next time you'll find yourself more prepared :) But seriously...it's ok, and I totally agree with the "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of good" quote...
Some of the decent options in most grocery stores would be: prewashed salad with tuna or sardines dumped over it....most places will also carry a healthier version of cold cuts, if not in the deli then in the deli aisle where the prepackaged stuff is...
but, ya done good with what you had at your disposal at the moment...
