I'm an Italian man, so the need to man scape all area's of my body is very essential or at least essential to my wife. However, I find that I tend to get razon burn and itch in certain "unspeakable" areas. How many of my Paleo brothers man scape and do you have specific "Paleo" approved products (razors, shaving cream, clippers, lotions, etc) or techniques that prevent the razor burns or itching that I am speaking off?

@Lucky B -

Dude you knew I would be on this like white on rice - a safe starch ala PHD so my comment is totally Paleo cool. A very rushed post since I need to sleep soon to get up early...

I'm all about the manscaping.

  • Schweaty balls may be Paleo, but the Mrs (or in my case Mrs-eseses) prefer the shorn scrotum -

  • A good base cut turns you from chia pet to porn star in minutes. Nuff said!!!

  • You never know when you might engage in some Paleo aquatic activities that require maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. Eliminating the 1970s bush will be the difference between catching your source of Omega 3 and being forced to eat some neolithic, omega 6 laden crap

  • As you know, my approach to Paleo is to avoid NADs, of which a subset is avoiding fro on the NADs

My tool of choice is my electric razor and the trimming attachment. But beware of the careless moment. I was going to start a reality TV series - "When Manscaping Goes Horribly Wrong". People would be mortified...it would be a smash hit.

Last piece of advice to quote one of my mentors - Don't forget the taint!!!

By the way, I really do use an electric razor with the trimming attachment :-) – Aravind Aug 10 2011 at 1:21
+1 for the candid no holds barred post :) – Vern Aug 10 2011 at 1:32

Well I took the bait (damn it all!) and googled "taint". I so did not need to know this. Need to bleach the brain now. Jeez. – Shari Bambino Aug 10 2011 at 1:47

@M - the sonic care is afterwards for the finishing touches. Plus floride helps with the burning sensation afterwards – Aravind Aug 10 2011 at 15:26

Ugh, why do guys want to look like boys? With the exception of a lot of back hair, all other hair on guys is sexy. And sharp, razored stubble is bad enough on the face much less all over the rest of the body. Keep the hair - it makes you look like a man!

Adult humans should look like adults, not children, and hair comes with the package. It's insane to spend that long on shaving. I can't believe that men have finally been sucked into this marketing scheme, especially considering the peril of hideous accidents. EWWW – Karen Aug 10 2011 at 10:32
I don't think its that I want to look like a boy but in my eyes it is "cleaner." It may in fact not be but I feel cleaner. – hemanvt Aug 10 2011 at 11:46

I'm trying to figure out how manscaping is in any way paleo? Somehow I don't see Grok as being a metrosexual.

sorry to butt in, dudes. so, for christmas im making this awesome shaving oil with wild verbena and argan oil. its awesome. my husband has been using it as my test monkey and is in love. this is a very, VERY low maintenance dude who has never used any other products aside from dr. bronners and hardly ever is found wearing something other than his carharts. anyhoo, he thinks is just great and hes getting the closest shave hes ever had.

on his face, people. his face. the rest of him is as nature intended.

so, you dont have to wait until the holidays and shell out money for my fancy stuff (though, i sure wouldnt mind if you did). try some jojoba oil if you can find it (theres currently a worldwide shortage of the stuff and it can get a bit pricy) or some olive oil or avocado oil or sunflower seed oil. spike it with some lavender and tee tree or chamomile. after a shower where your hair is soft, massage a tiny bit into the area you want to shave, wait a minute for it to skink in, and go to town. makes a crappy, rusty, dull old razor feel like new and you can see where youre going. its good stuff.

After the roaring success of my initial purchase - I WILL buy this. Then I will try my own hand at topiary for the holidays. – none Aug 10 2011 at 2:21
aww shucks. so glad youre happy with it, mama. – being Aug 10 2011 at 3:12
I bet this concoction you're describing, and also making, would be awesome on legs. Hurry UP holidays! I'll leave the other sculpting to the professionals, tho :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Aug 10 2011 at 21:07
Most safety and straight-razor users prefer something that lathers, because just using oil for lubrication doesn't tend to work that well. I was all about trying oil-based systems, but I agree that glycerin-based soaps perform better. Am I missing something in your description? – WyldKard Aug 11 2011 at 17:54
if youre using a straight edge, using a pre-shave oil will still help you get the most from your shaving cream of choice, and leave your skin better conditioned. the particular oil that im making also contains essential oils that are antiseptic without alcohol and can be used after-shave as well. there are also just the basic anti-aging and skin-conditioning benefits of using oil between shaves. if you prefer the slide you get from glycerine and/or silicone-based shave creams, then go for it. but using an oil pre-shave will work even better. – being Aug 11 2011 at 18:11

Aha, not one week ago I was having this very discussion. I've never shaved but I've always kinda wanted to. The thing holding me back is the stubble-length term when it's growing back. Like a crewcut or something. Seems like it'd be just kinda silly for a while. Like maybe it's just gotta be all or nothing.

As for the rest of my body I guess I'm kinda lucky to not have a lot of shoulder hair, back hair, etc.

As someone who likes to try new things, I say do it. The stubble might look weird but it could also be something fun while the growing-in process is occurring :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Aug 10 2011 at 4:37

Hah, I went and got laser hair removal once, because I shaved my chest and found it was the worst thing ever.

Soon as I did killed the itch, that was several years ago now I have no problem shaving without any issues.

Not really paleo, but best answer I can give.

wax or invest in a machine that cuts it down and thins it out but doesnt shave it all off!!

I invested in a traditional shaving kit with a single blade.

The Gilette stuff is shit compared to it. Since you're italian you can probable get the Proraso products for a nice price. They are quite OK and gives you a fresh feeling. A shaving brush is also to recommend.

You'll find lots of traditional razors, shaving creams, after shaves etc on eBay.

I have never been sore nor had any razor burns since I started traditional shaving.

Just be a bit careful the first times, it is quite easy to cut yourself. Guess I don't need to tell you it can really hurt, especially in unspeakable places...

You'll find lot of good videos for shaving (you face) and most of the principles on youtube. Check out mantic59's channel.

Best of luck!

Besides, the shaving blades is much cheaper on traditional razors. I think you'll get 100 double edged blades for 21 USD. – Lars Aug 10 2011 at 14:01

Oh my god this is such a funny question. But to chime in on the matter, I think it's unnatural when men shave that region. Seems like a girly thing to me and I like men a rugged and tough. But that's just my opinion.

Wouldn't anyone shaving any body part be unnatural, man or woman? I think you're just exposing your preference, which is just fine. ;-) – greymouser May 20 at 0:18

First of all, to address the fact that multiple people have questioned its paleo-ness, I believe that many cultures throughout human history have chosen to modify or remove body hair, whether it be shaving the head or facial hair or "other regions."

While I am not a man, I do remove everything "down below" for reasons that would also apply to men. First of all, I do not like being damp down there when working out. Second of all, when I am not "bald," the rubbing of my clothes against the hair is extremely uncomfortable and itchy. I could imagine that for men, it would be even worse because certain organs would always be itchy.

As for my hair removal method of choice, I use an epilator. It works very well and results last longer than shaving. The epilator is like an electric razor only with many little tweezer-like things that pluck the hairs. However, if you do not want to be completely bald, this would not be your method of choice, I am afraid.

Other than the weekly face shave, nothing else is even on my radar. But then again, I'm part Puerto Rican, and we don't really have much body hair.
