Okay hard boiled eggs and pepperoni sticks kind of get old after a while.

I need some ideas for inexpensive low-carb snacks, ideally no more than 2% non-fiber carbs by mass.

Ideally it should contain a decent amount of fat too.

Totally agree with all that has been submitted. Also, what about celery and almond butter and rolling up slices of meat and putting avocado in the middle? – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Aug 10 2011 at 10:34

I have carried cold bacon in my briefcase; also leftover chunks of roast. Dogs love me.

Left over roast sounds good. – Noah Aug 13 2011 at 18:41

I don't want to be that guy, but I've found that when I'm going low carb, its easier to eat 2-3 big meals a day. I don't really crave snacks.

There's nothing wrong with that guy, really. – Ambimorph Aug 10 2011 at 15:12

I know the feeling! Hey, all we can do is speak our truth and let the chips fall where they may. – Shari Bambino Aug 10 2011 at 18:07
The snacks are probably mostly social but my wife insists she needs them – Noah Aug 13 2011 at 18:42

Well, I have to jump in with avocados...

Good level of fat, the majority of carbs are fibrous and they chock full of vits and mins.

Oh, and they taste delicious.

Coconut in any way shape or form is a winner - raw, chips, dessicated, butter or cream.

Macadamia nuts are good, just be aware of the caloric density a handful will impart.

Good idea on the avocados, I like em. – Noah Aug 13 2011 at 18:42
yeah an avocado and a few hard boiled eggs make a great snack/meal – Jeff Aug 15 2011 at 4:36
Okay, so it's not a "snack" per se, but half an avocado mashed with a boiled egg and crumbled crispy bacon sprinkled on top. That's breakfast... :) – Harry Aug 15 2011 at 7:10

careful with the processing on the pepperoni and pork rinds though, those get pretty funky if you read the ingredients...

Yeah I try to buy ones that are as "normal" as possible. It's amazing how many sugar is the second ingredient. – Noah Aug 13 2011 at 18:43

Kipper snacks

sardines

avocado

eggs

jerky (though, the cheaper has the preservatives ...meh ..)

pork rinds

left over cooked meat or chicken

hefty dose of greens in animal fat of some sort

I will echo what a couple people have already said, I find no need to snack at all, I have been LC for years. I figured out that snacking, at least for me, was just a habit. I am rarely hungry between meals but if I ever do decide I need a snack I always have left over steak in the fridge.

Better to not snack. Eat more when you eat so you don't need a snack. Especially since you are low carb - give the insulin the longest break you can. – Dave S. Aug 10 2011 at 18:50

Or you could eat less at meals and then eat snacks so you can socialize with your co-workers. Socialization is very paleolithic. – Noah Aug 13 2011 at 18:45

I have gone VLC and I really don't crave snacks as well, but when I do I enjoy a cup of frozen raspberries or blueberries drizzled with a tbls or 2 of coconut milk.

Pork rinds. Broccoli and/or cauliflauer with shredded cheese and nuked for 30 seconds

personally, I'm a fan of a mouth squirt of whipped cream (real cream) right out of the can, or clotted cream and a few strawberries. Now, that's a snack! I also make my own trail mixes from bulk items, so you can control what goes in. I love string cheese, or fresh mozzarella for a quick caprese salad.

I'm also a huge fan of some already mentioned: celery + almond butter, and kale chips.

I do home made rollmops herrings with lactofermented chornichons and cider vinegar base, a great snack. gut/brainfoot in one roll ;)

I have given up snacks as well on low carb. However hard boiled eggs, cheese, butter and whey would all be on my list.

Is cheese paleo? – dubpluris Aug 10 2011 at 20:56
dubpluris: some people believe it's allowed, especially older aged products. – Noah Aug 13 2011 at 18:48

My favorite snack are:

Olives warmed up a bit mixed with almonds and sometimes cheese chunks.

Meat and cheese rolled up around avo and/or kraut is really good.

A bowl of broccoli or spinach with butter

Bacon with guac as a dip

Baked salami chips with guac or mashed sardines or kraut

Baked salami chips -- dang! – Rose Aug 10 2011 at 18:30
Oh girl! Heaven I tell ya. You can nuke them too. Crunchy fatty goodness. – Shari Bambino Aug 10 2011 at 18:46
Where do you find salami w/o a bunch of additives? I'm being sincere. And I live in Mississippi, so our options here are limited at best. That sounds SO yummy though! – Melinda Aug 11 2011 at 3:44

I buy Applegate Farms Genoa Salami or I buy from a local chartucerie that makes their own. applegatefarms.com/products/genoa_salami.aspx It's pricey but you can order the Applegate Farms online if you can't find it. Maybe you have some local butcher shops that may make their own and have something a bit more natural. Might be worth asking around. – Shari Bambino Aug 11 2011 at 4:01
I've seen salami and pepperoni both uncured in the hormel naturals line – WildBound Aug 30 2011 at 15:52

In my mind, a snack is just a smaller meal between meals, so my snacks don't usually differ from meals that much. Leftover chicken or pork chops (for some reason I never seem to have leftover steak....), raw or cooked veggies (kale chips, carrot sticks, asparagus), meatballs, bacon, etc. When I have tasty "snack" foods like nuts or cured meats, I end up overindulging.

If you need to avoid refrigeration or have to eat while driving ror something, many of these won't work, but if you're at home or work or otherwise near a fridge/microwave/fork, there is no reason to eat only "snack" foods when you need a snack.

I love kale chips. and yes, thank you for knowing what it means to snack, and not having to cook or prepare much. seems most think a cup of lard sandwiched between a couple of animals and wrapped in a buffalo hide is the only way to go. – Yvette Aug 14 2011 at 9:55

Try chunks of chicken, turkey, pork, or boiled egg - cold - mixed with a bit of full fat sour cream (provided that you tolerate dairy) and some salsa verde - it's a chicken salad with a lil' kick. YUM. :) Also try serving up in lettuce and cabbage leaf wraps.
