Do you think the elimination of pastured butter during the Whole 30 is imperative?

I am a giant butter fiend, and it surprisingly wasn't too tough to elminate during my Whole30. I used some lard & tallow (pastured) and coconut or avocado oils for cooking, drizzled olive oil on cooked veggies.

Thanks Jules. I'll try the olive oil. I'd rather go the whole way. – BaconHealsChic Aug 10 2011 at 13:40

When I wasn't doing dairy, I did olive oil on my veggies. Sometimes I added balsamic vinegar too. Shhh...! – gilliebean Aug 10 2011 at 13:53

i think it is if you want to see how you react to dairy. ghee is a way to get the butter flavor without the milk solids. but, why bother doing a WHole30 if youre going to break the rules from the get-go? just, do a super-clean paleo with butter.

ghee (aka Clarified Butter) is super easy to render yourself. Flavour does change a bit, but the smoke point increases as well, and can be used for pan-frying whatever you wish. Also, since the rendering process eliminates the milk solids, you don't have to worry about the dairy aspect. – romesaz Aug 10 2011 at 19:48

Yes. But that's only because that what the program calls for. If you want to eat butter or something that's not within the program, why do it? Just do 30 days of custom paleo and don't call it a Whole 30.

ahh! jinx..... – being Aug 10 2011 at 13:25
Good points truth sayers! Background; paleo for 6 months WITH dairy. Trying to reduce my reliance/addiction to cheese. I suppose coconut oil, olive oil could be used on my veggies but the butter would be sorely missed. I like the ghee option. Although I don't fully understand the science I realize there are casein sensitivies and so forth I could discover by elimination and re-add. (Or clarifying.) What do you all use on your veggies? – BaconHealsChic Aug 10 2011 at 13:30

i love butter, and dont like all my food tasting like coconuts. i did a whole30 and noticed no issues adding dairy back in, so now i enjoy butter liberally. THANK GOD. – being Aug 10 2011 at 13:39

@akd- Great minds....;-) @BaconHealsChic- I have a CRAZY sensitive dairy allegy. Since going paleo it's been amplified. I end up using a lot of olive oil, EVOO, or animal fat. – Ben Aug 10 2011 at 13:50
