So I have been eating Paleo for about 6mo, and for the past couple weeks LC. One thing I have noticed is that I can eat a S*** Ton of food. It seems like when I sit down and eat, I could just keep eating and not stop. Often times I have to just tell myself I have had enough. Now, I don't constantly gorge myself....I just feel like I could. Any body else notice this? Does this ever change?

I have no answer for you, but you're not alone. I just had 4 chicken drumsticks, 3 boiled eggs, a pot of full fat greek yogurt, a cup of broccoli, and a tray-full of kale chips... and I'm thinking I'm still a bit peckish. – Pching Jan 22 2012 at 15:39

i think answers will vary a lot depending on the individual. erik, i'm a former fat dude. i can eat a lot. this whole notion of feeling 'full and satisfied' is relative. some of us will always have to approach this with a bit more focus & a game plan. i'm one of those. i can't rely on some immediate body signal telling me i'm full. i'm glad that works so well for some people, but whether i'm eating fat & meat, or fruit and veggies, i don't get that sudden signal.

i have to eat at a slower pace, chew well, and remember to wait & drink a glass of water when i finish whatever portion i've made for myself. call it a leptin dysfunction, whatever you want, but feeling "full" doesn't kick in for me until 10 - 15 minutes after my last bite. i rarely if ever feel "completely stuffed, like i couldn't take another bite," as some people put it. i almost always finish whatever portion of something i put out, so i have to consciously plan this aspect of my meal.

and that's the way it goes!

i should also say that there's a difference between "feeling full" throughout your day, and feeling like you've eaten all you want at a meal. i always feel full, i.e. not hungry throughout the day. but when it comes to actually eating, i need to choose a point to stop. this has little to do with hormones or satiety in my opinion, and much more to do with psychology & emotion and the pleasure we can attach to eating. Good Calories, Bad Calories totally changed my life & my approach to diet, but gary totally misses this. there is absolutely an emotional component to this, beyond hormones! – delete me Aug 11 2011 at 20:12

just a comment that it's normal for it to take 10-15 minutes for that satiety signal to kick in after you finish eating, not a sign of any dysfunction. Hence the common diet advice to eat slowly. – Olivia Aug 11 2011 at 22:49

How fast are you eating and how much do you chew your food? I notice that if I'm in a situation where I have to eat really fast instead of being able to savour my food a little and chew throughly, it creates that annoying feeling where your brain and mouth want more food, even though you're full and have eaten enough.

I think that the sick, bloated feeling is often associated with fullness and satiety. Without all those carbs and NAD's (no bloat) it feels like you can eat forever. I think it takes some time for our true hunger and fullness signals to be reactivated.

The key to feeling full and satisfied is to really pay attention to how much stable fats you are consuming. Try eating a much larger amount of stable fats to boost your satiety. You should feel more full if you cook (preferably stir fry) with coconut oil (you can purchase at a supermarket). I fry my sweet potatoes in coconut oil and make Paleo-fries. You want to get as much animal fat and protein as you can from grass-fed sources. As has been mentioned, fat and protein make you feel full. Since protein is easy to get, I'm guessing you need more stable fat from saturated fat sources.

That sounds unusual. Typically fats and proteins have very high satiety levels. What are you eating? Is your gut very stretched from previous WOEs?

It comes and goes for me. Some days I am ravenous and others I can skip breakfast and lunch and couldn't be bothered.

Since I am just getting started, I haven't learned a lot of variety yet so my days are all very similar as far as what foods I eat.

I am also this way, for a 5'6" woman I can eat "like a linebacker"...

Same here. I can eat all day. Been paleo for 2 years now. I'm not overweight, probably a bit under, and work out about 4 times a week.

I have a weird eating pattern, but it works for me.

I like to "Veg it Up" on certain days and only eat vegetables on those days to keep my digestive system moving. I can eat a lot of pounds of vegs those days.

When I "Fat it Up", I eat protein/fat and a small amount of vegetables. Those days I eat a lot less because I feel full. So my suggestion, like many others, is to "Fat it Up."

I was like this too. 9 mos Primal now.

I think for me it was my body making up for years of malnourishment/malabsorption (14 years vegetarian.) Make sure your D3, magnesium and Omega 3 levels are dialed in.

And don't worry about it. Things will balance out in the big picture as you become more comfortable with the lifestyle & introduce more variety into your diet.

As mentioned earlier--emotional eating can play a big part in this.

This is my problem...I am never satisfied and always feel hungry, even if I've eaten a pound of meat and a huge plate of veggies covered in fat.
