I file soy sauce in the 20% of stuff that I don't stress about. I use it occasionally as a seasoning but I don't marinate food in buckets of it. I hate eating soy products in general, but ignore it in soy sauce. Call me weird.

^^^ What she said. I avoid soy because of the phytoestrogens and my own propensity for gynocomastia...but for some dishes, it's simply a must so on my cheat meal day, if it's on the menu...it's a 20% item for me. :) – Andy Aug 12 2011 at 1:15

We use soy sauce very occasionally. We buy Tamari, which is wheat free soy sauce. I believe that coconut aminos is a good replacement (but I've only heard it from you guys on the internet, so I have no way of knowing what it is...).

Weirdly enough, the old bottle of tamari in my cupboard has wheat. Time to toss it. – Ambimorph Aug 11 2011 at 22:17
I got the coconut aminos; I had to use so much it wasn't worth the price for me :( When I'm not doing a 30 day challenge, I'm gonna stick with tamari. – Jules K Aug 11 2011 at 22:24

Soy sauce is fermented. I believe that the fermentation process removes the majority of the toxins found in raw, unprocessed soy like phytic acid and phytoestrogens.

I use it sparingly in my Asian dishes and stir fries. If you're cautious about gluten, some brands do make gluten and wheat free variations, which taste pretty good!

I recommend the san-j brand of gluten free tamari. it even comes in packets you can take with you when you eat out (mmm, sashimi) – Moonablaze May 21 2012 at 6:10

Soy sauce = something I am never going to give up. I just love it that much.

Coconut aminos are a great sub, a very slightly different taste but I and my SO thinks taste better... and she's NOT on the paleo bandwagon at all.

I switched over to coconut aminos and it's a great sub. It was one of the first things i looked up before going paleo, that's how much I love soy sauce :)
