I was diagnosed with a severe vitamin D deficiency after a harsh winter (slept during the day because I participated in a contest to win a car. I won the car, I lost my health, and basically all the rest too) : my level was 9.

I know there's A LOT of information about vitamin D here, but it's very confusing. Some say cod liver oil is bad, some say you need vitamin K2 too, some say vitamin A is bad, ...

I just don't know what to do. I'm on Bee's Candida Diet, which recommends quite some supplements (eg. I take 1200IU of Vitamin D, 30.0000IU of Vitamin A in cod liver oil). Everything I read about Vitamin A makes me worry a lot though. I what I'm supplementing wrong?

Lots of great info at the Vitamin D Council.

My n=1 experience was that supplementing a bit over the suggested maintenance dose of 1,000 IUs of D3 per 25 lbs of body weight got me up to high sufficiency in a year. I took 8,000 IUs. Less would have been fine. I weigh 125lbs.

I now take 4-6,000 IUs of D3 daily, liver once a week, pastured butter daily (for K) and Neptune Krill Oil 1000 mg daily (for Omega 3.) Haven't been sick in almost 2 years!

I avoid cod liver oil--way too much vitamin A! Not a physiological amount, IMO.

Gonna supplement 5000 IU daily, and will try to eat ghee once in a while, but I can't stand the odor. – Korion Aug 14 2011 at 10:59
the butter has to be pastured--grassfed--in order to have that K, right? otherwise, I think you could eat bone marrow for it instead. – harms.20 Aug 14 2011 at 14:44
Kinda weird. I first thought it had a horrible smell, some months later I had to keep myself from eating it or I would gulp down a pound of it at every meal. – Korion Apr 20 2012 at 13:07

Oh and if you're paleo on a budget, I'd suggest the Now Foods Vitamin D-3 5,000 IU. Pretty cheap and good stuff (otherwise Robb Wolf wouldn't use it himself, see his post 'My training at 39')

Great ingredients list in the Now Foods brand :). I'm gonna buy that one. Normally I listen to Bee for everything, but I need to look a bit more into all this... My vitamin A intake is really high ... – Korion Aug 14 2011 at 10:52
Healthy Origins is pretty cheap too, but I like Now Foods more because it's smaller. – Korion Apr 20 2012 at 13:07

You can take 8000 to 10,000 I.U.s of Vit D3 a day - do not take with high magnesium foods or supplements as it deminishes absorbsion. ditch all sunscreen products and take off your shirt, wear shorts and get as much skin exposed for like 10 to 15 mins a day. There are also prescription drugs that completely kill the Vit D cycle. So if you are on meds, research their possible interactions with D3.

In the winter, be like that pet that lays in the sunbeam through a window.

What? Does magnesium reduce vitamin D absorption? I take magnesium too (thought it helped vitamin D absorption...). Right now there's no sun, but I stay in the sun for hours when there is any. My face has been red from the sun all week :D. And about clothing : I never wear anything else than shorts ^^ – Korion Aug 14 2011 at 10:59
It moderately descreases the absorbtion of vit D3. Take them 3-4 hours apart so you get your maximum D3 bioavailability. – Yvette Aug 14 2011 at 13:06
Are you sure magnesium is bad for vitamin D? I thought it was the other way around? – Korion Aug 14 2011 at 13:40
I'm with Yvette. 3 months of 10k per day. Retest. – Ikco Aug 14 2011 at 17:04
you may have come across this site, and I'm wary to share it because this guy is the type of alarmist that would make your ass pinch shut and I normally can't stand him. but here goes: naturalnews.com/vitamin_d.html – Yvette Aug 15 2011 at 10:55

Get out in the sun mid day every day for awhile. Without burning, of course. Do it now while the sun is still high in the sky mid day. Your primary goal should be safe sun exposure, not supplements. There are other biochemical reactions beyong vit D that happen with UV exposure.

You probably can benefit from animal based vitamin A. But there's no reason to tie that your D deficiency.

I get as much sun as possible, though I don't go outside if the weather is bad. I could get outside more, but what's the point? I think I'm gonna try to find an outside activity that I like. I should start playing soccer again, or find something else to do. – Korion Aug 14 2011 at 13:41

Unfortunately, this isn't a viable option for those of us who spend our winters in the Pacific Northwet. – Lauren Aug 14 2011 at 20:20
One thing women in particular should consider is still protecting the face from sun exposure. There no undoing the deep skin changes of UV exposure. A vast number of women start wishing they had been more careful starting in their thirties. Damage is the same for men, of course. But the weathered look works better with us. – Don Aug 16 2011 at 16:59

I think the fear of vitamin A is not based on true vitamin A from animal products , but Beta carotene which can be toxic. Before this fear of vitamin A became a thing I took 25,000 IU of VA during each of my four pregnancy's. Nothing happened adversly. Check out the Weston Price organization for a good deal of evidence based information. http://www.westonaprice.org/

Retinol from animal sources is the toxic form. – Dragonfly Sep 15 2011 at 21:18
Based on my experiences you'd say beta-carotene is toxic. I feel very, very, very cold after every meal high in it, but don't get it from retinol. – Korion Apr 20 2012 at 13:09
