Hi everyone. Im new to the site and also to paleo. I have been paleo for 2 days and seem to be going ok. I find myself eating less and less everyday. Due to feeling satisfied. I havent weighed in but am planning on doing so once i have reached the 7 day mark. Would like to lose about 40 pounds. I am 5ft11 and 215 at the moment. Would love to hear some of your stats, how long you have been on paleo and also how much you have lost. Thanx heaps.

wow, you sound exactly like this other poster "nick". paleohacks.com/users/6287/nick#axzz1VA4jnCq4 He has been eating Paleo for longer of course, but has asked many similar questions- - what an incredible coincidence! – g. Aug 16 2011 at 4:10
Thank-you for your post grenadine. And also for the warm welcome – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 4:41
Just keep going Grenadine. Im sure the weight loss will come. Dont be too hard onyourself :-) – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 7:20

i'm not sure what you have to gain by playing dumb and asking the same questions over and over and then pretending to be a new poster entirely, but i think it's creepy as well as annoying. – g. Aug 16 2011 at 17:05

a lot of people are saying that the weight will come off "if youre doing it right", but i have to disagree. there are plenty of people who are "doing it right" and who still struggle. it often takes a lot of tweaking, hacking, playing and experimenting to find the RIGHT version of paleo for you.

ive been paleo for about 11 months. i lost 35 pounds in six months, and nothing since march. ive experimented with ketogenic, zc, vlc, moderate carb. moderate protein, high protein. high fat, moderate fat. starchy tubers and gluten free grains and none. lacto-paleo and dairy free. whole30 and carb cycling.

everyones body is different and depending on hormonal status, medical hx, how you gained the weight and about a trillion other variables you may lose weight on the faster side or the slower side. best advice i have is to focus on the myriad of other health benefits that paleo has to offer you, and everything else will fall into place.

akd thanx for the informative reply. Much appreciated. Could it be that you have reached your optimal weight? – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 2:39

nope. 35 more pounds to go to get into the healthy range. i am rather dense though- im 5'8" female with 140lbs LBM. its ok. im patient. ive got all the time in the world, and im healthier than most people i know even carrying some extra fluff. – being Aug 16 2011 at 2:52
Stress has a huge factor in losing as well, if you are not patient and always worrying about a number, then that can be more detrimental than eating crap food. akd, your "if your doing it right" is correct. Proper eating, sleeping, managing stress, exercising, getting enough daily sun, all play into the factors you speak of. If any of them are out of whack...bye bye weight loss. We all have plateaus, and if your food is good, I'd look at the other factors I just mentioned to get that weight loss moving again. :-D – Tim Aug 17 2011 at 13:34
i look at it all, and im pretty patient. im just taking care of myself and letting by body do what it needs to do. – being Aug 17 2011 at 16:17

Keep on it! Don't go crazy on fruits or honey. The truer you are to paleo, the truer it is to you.

Love the analogy Tracy. Thanx for the feedback – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 1:44

If you're doing it right, you should lose a pound or two a week. It'll be faster at first, until you lose about 20 lbs, then it'll slow down. Seen it happen a lot.

Thanx LiciaH, i didnt expect this much fedback in this short time. I just hope the weight comes off as fast. – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 1:43

I've been on it for 3 weeks and have lost 16 lbs. If you can help it, don't cheat. It's not worth itt.

Paxenos i would love to know your stats. Very motivating post. Thankyou :-) – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 2:27
Seriously, there are no cheats, just bad choices. You have got to stick with it for as long as possible - even if you don't see results. I feel a lot better now that I've started back not eating grains and I'm going to give it a try without dairy (except butter or Ghee). 3 days in! – Oranges13 Sep 1 2011 at 17:42

I've been mostly paleo for about year. I haven't lost any weight but I've lost three dress sizes (from a 14 to an 8). I lost those dress sizes rapidly, in the first 60 days or so. The pounds are not always indicative of success. My body fat is low and I've put on a lot of muscle.

Awesome Sara. Yeah the inches are more important than what the scales say. Good for you :-) – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 2:38

It will come off quickly the first 2 or 3 weeks. I lost 17 the 1st month, 11 the 2nd, and 5 the 3rd...but also lost 8.6% body fat too. So just keep at it!! Dial in your food first, stay clean all the time!! No cheats!! Once you've been on it a bit and see how your body reacts then you ramp up the exercise and it'll start up again. Stick with it!!

You can see my stats over at my facebook page in the notes section. I have my story, results so far, recipes, foods I eat, and lots of great info!! Congrats on 2 days!! You're on your way to the best healthy you of your life!!

Tim great reply man. 17pounds in a mnth is phenomenal. Can i ask your daily food intake. What does your food list look like? Thanx again. – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 2:32
Thanks!! I normally eat no more than twice a day. A typical day for me is 3-4 eggs, some meat in the eggs, usually bacon, cooked in bacon fat. Avocado or guacamole, and salsa, I make both. Dinner will be meat and vegetable, asparagus, carrots, broccoli, or salad greens. Water or Tazo Zen Green tea unsweetened, all day long. If I have a snack it'll be macadamia nuts or walnuts and a piece of fruit as a rare treat, some berries, or apple or orange. I intermittent fast daily..usually going dinner to lunch 18 hrs between meals, some days will do 24, dinner to dinner before eating. – Tim Aug 17 2011 at 13:24
The foods I eat are in the notes section of my page on facebook. Check it out. Detailed results of my first 30, 60, 90 day spreadsheets are linked there too. – Tim Aug 17 2011 at 13:25

It's been slow for me - 16 lbs. in 2 1/2 months - but I'm good with that. The fact that I can lose without ever feeling hungry is just an amazing thing for me and well worth the wait.

ive been on it for 4 about 4 months now...originally i lost about 5 pounds but i have actually gained it back plus 3/4-ish pounds BUT this is with a combination of the paleo and diet and crossfit. my weight was originally 152 now im 156 but with a MUCH lower body fat. ive read that the paleo diet is not intended for weight loss, but it allows your body to find its natural weight/composition. however, this usually means your weight is lower and your comp is much improved. eating paleo is a slow loss, if a loss at all, but the results are fantastic. i get on the scale and find myself looking at the 156 totally content because I look and feel better. i spoke with a paleo nutritionist and he said that if i continue on my eating regiment the little bit of excess fat i still have should eventually go away and i will see a weight loss (about 13/14 pound estimate). keep playing with what you eat and dont get too overwhelmed by the numbers...its about how you look and feel.

I began paleo on 2/1/2011 at 215 lbs (5'9") and after 30 days weighed 185. I was pretty strict with my diet but I consumed a good bit of fruit initially to help with the intense sugar withdrawl I experienced. For exercise, I was hiking/sprinting/scrambling on natural terrain 2-3 times per week for 2-3 hours per session. I have since dropped as low as 171 but my average weight is around 174. Once I hit 175, I began consuming whole milk again. I feel great! I compete in xc mountain bike races and I'm much faster than before. I hang with guys who last year would have beat me by 30 minutes. The only downside is that I had to buy all new clothes.

Haha, yep. I've got quite the wardrobe change coming up. – Paxenos Aug 16 2011 at 18:14

Good for you and I hope you reach your goals and feel amazing doing it!

I've been rocking it paleo style for about 3 weeks and have already lost 10 pounds. I'm breastfeeding so I think that helps but in general I've heard and read that weight loss on paleo can be quite fast. :)

BunchOfMalarkey thanx for sharing your stats. Im looking at about 10 to 15kg of weight loss. I have been told this is the way to go. And 10lbs in 3 weeks is incredible. Congrats :-) – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 1:46
Thanks! (And, you're welcome.) – BunchOfMalarkey Aug 16 2011 at 1:58

It also depends on how overweight you are. I'm also 5'11". Started out at 270. The weight loss was about 2 lbs/week, sometimes more. Naturally you eat less than it takes to maintain such a high weight. However when I got to 200 it began to crawl. It can take two or three weeks now for me to lose a pound. Fat is calorie dense. Yes, it inhibits insulin, but there is another fat storage pathway--excess dietary fat doesn't just vanish into thin air. While it's unlikely to put on weight, it can make weight loss at the target end very slow. Being younger helps.

Mr. Trashcan please tell me your daily food intake. We are very simillar. Granted you were 270 and im 215, but still fairly close. Thankyou for the stats, much appreciated. – GTS350 Aug 16 2011 at 2:29
I drink coffee in the AM with some coconut oil, then water throughout the day. Eat dinner only - beef, pork, lamb, veal, chicken, about a pound, sometimes with butter added. So I'm guessing between 1000 and 1500 cals/day depending. And two days a week (because I work later) I'll often eat nothing or a smaller amount. I literally would have to eat salads or nothing to lose weight faster. While I am not hungry during the day, I do envy people who can eat more meals. I cannot lose weight if I eat earlier meal(s); it does not diminish my appetite for dinner. – Mr. Trashcan Aug 16 2011 at 15:44

My stats: Lost 16.3 lbs in 49 days, which is about 2.4 lbs per week. It is pretty steady. I'd say, some might disagree, it's not a problem if you will weight yourself every day - I do and it motivates me when I see how the number is going down. ;-)

I even eat moderate amounts of fruits and the weight still goes down. What I cut was soft drinks, candies, bread, pastries, and also severely limited potatoes and rice. In short, my experience is that going low carb causes weight loss.

Regarding exercising, for now I opted for walking and hiking only, and it seems to be enough for now.

Good luck to your endeavor, greyman

Weight loss might be swift in the beginning, especially if you go low or very low carbs. Don't cheat for the first 30 days. I would also stay off dairy and cut out nuts. If you find that nuts keep you extra satisfied, then by all means eat them. For me, nuts are just too much calories in a reasonably-sized serving, which is a golf-ball-sized handful, not a bag.

I would also stay off fruit at first. I saw best results by leaving them out. Paleo fixed my insulin sensitivity, so I can now enjoy more fruit and carbs in general without gaining fat, but it took some time. Right now I eat 2-4 servings of fruit a day and a variable amount of starches, and I can still see some body recomposition.

Nutritional choices are #1 in weight loss. #2 is rest/sleep, #3 is physical activity. This is my opinion and experiences, not academic facts.

Don't get frustrated if weight loss stalls. Plateaus are common, but they can be beaten. If you hit a wall, don't change everything right away, keep doing what you do, keep eating smart, and you might beat the plateau without any hacking. If you think you might need some hacks, intermittent fasting is a great way to start, but don't do it if your daily nutrition isn't already in a pretty decent balance and if you have any issues with sleep, digestion or other health concerns.

Keep up the good work. One more tip, when you think or crave foods that are bad for you, remember, they are not going to disappear from the world, and there will be another time to have it, when it is truly worth it!

edit: forgot to answer you question: I've been paleo for a year now, I lost about 20 pounds in 8 months (from 190 to 170, im a 6'1" male).
