I can't even imagine taking a sip of coke. Or eating a chocolate bar (though I'm happy to eat good choocolate). Or borekas, which is common where I live (a white flour and margarine delight). Or all sorts of ready-made processed food from the supermarket.

It's not that I don't have my cheats, but there are things I don't think I'll eat as long as I live - even as a cheat. I see them as toxic, so why would I eat them?

What about you?

Bread, beer, anything with HFCS – The Quilt Aug 17 2011 at 13:08

I'd love to say HFCS will never cross my lips, but it's a pipe dream. As long as I agree to eat in other people's homes or in a restaurant, even if I make smart food choices, a bit of poison, er, I mean HFCS is going to sneak in, like it or not. – Glither Aug 17 2011 at 14:26
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?? im armenian and assyrian and i used to eat cheese or lamb borek ALL THE TIME! its so amazingly delicious and one of my most favorite childhood treats. i dont know that ill be able to turn one down again at our next family gathering. – being Aug 17 2011 at 16:20
I'm in Israel, and most borekas that I've encountered have been store bought and definitely not amazingly delicious. But homemade is very tastsy, even if it's with margerine. My mother in law used to make delicious meat borekas. Soooo good. – Glither Aug 18 2011 at 4:50

Non-dairy creamer, powdered or liquid!! Sugar, corn syrup solids, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors, and it still tastes just nasty!

Blech, blech, blech.alt text

My grandparents were addicted to these, and even had a variety that could be whipped to make shortcake topping. They believed that they were healthier than butter. I believe that they took a few years off their lives. – thhq Aug 17 2011 at 17:23
ducks head I'm a former non-dairy (liquid) creamer addict. Esp. International Delight Cinnabon. I really thought it tasted good. And get this - when we were transitioning, I bought the kind with real cream (as if that made it better - doh). I had to just keep reading the ingredient list before I finally gave it up. Now I can't even imagine having it again. Coconut milk or black for me now. – Scrubjay Aug 17 2011 at 19:24

I actually like eating non paleo foods from time to time. It helps remind me of how bad they are for me when i get sick after eating them. Anytime I have alot of gluten or any processed foods or high sugar foods...I get physcially ill and run back to Paleo land : )

This is me. There is nothing that I won't say I will NEVER eat again. I generally don't eat crap food, but it happens sometimes. Occasionally, I even ~enjoy~ it. What I am much better at now, is not letting a cheat turn into a binge or into a month long bender. – sherpamelissa Aug 17 2011 at 14:46

I will never eat bread again. I've [finally] stopped craving it and besides, it's just a carrier for the yummy stuff inbetwixt*, anyway. Gluten backs me up anyway (while simultaneously giving me diarrhea -- it's the gift that keeps on giving, that gluten 'tis!), so meh. I'll abstain from it and my IBS will thank me.

I'll never touch anything soy-based, either. My belly swells up within minutes and I get spots and my period starts to get wonky if I eat too much (as I learned when I was a newbie veggie a few years back). Plus, I have yet to taste anything soy-based that actually tastes a fraction as good as what it's trying to emulate. Ew.

*That word reminds me, I'll never eat a Twix or a Kit-Kat again, either. =P

There is absolutely nothing non-paleo that I will never eat again. The paleo Lifestyle is not about deprivation it is about making the healthiest possible choices. Having said that I have free will to choose what I put in my mouth, if I choose to eat some cake or bread, pizza, etc I do so without feeling guilty, I may suffer the consequences but I accept those.

Never say never.

I will never eat things like pizza or apple fritters without knowing for certain how horrible they are for me. I probably will still eat them eventually because they are delicious!

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

I don't know when, but I think I will inevitably end up eating a lemon flavored one. It was one of those treats during my very early years that I'll never quite be able to let go. – Dylan Aug 17 2011 at 17:01

Dylan I'm with you on that one. I got half a pie once a week in my lunch and it was THE BEST. This is one non-paleo food that actually doesn't make me feel like crap after I eat it. I take that as a sign from God that it's ok every once in a while. – Shari Bambino Aug 17 2011 at 22:16

2 sources of great evil :

  • Bread
  • Candy

Never again! I was almost crying when looking in the mirror 9 months ago, I would never want to experience that feeling again.

fake sugar! aspartame et. al. ive always hated it and the gross metallic aftertaste, but tolerated it because i thought it was healthier than sugar, and i could eat sweet-tasting things without the calories. NEVER. AGAIN. i finally got permission to not eat that crap. i would much rather eat real sugar infrequently than the fake stuff all the time.

I am most definitely in the "never say never" camp with the one exception of non-pastured animal products. I consider CAFO meat and poultry products to be decidedly non-paleo and I will no longer participate in this atrocious system. I'm already headed to wild-caught pescatarian status as it is (cause I want to be just like Aravind when I grow up.) I'll go vegetarian before I eat CAFO anything again and apparently you can't be paleo vegetarian (as I learned at AHS-insert eye-rolling here) so if CAFO were to become my only option I guess I'd leave paleo and just do the best I could.

Otherwise I am game for anything. Never again never worked for me for many reasons and I just can't be successful barring any food from my possibilities. I do have to use this option wisely and think I have so far.

i'd disagree. i'd rather eat paleo, but non-organic and CAFO meat and support the rather flawed system for the time being. for now, being in college, i cannot afford much of any food. i could not live as a vegetarian or if i did, i would have to be very fastidious with my protein, b vitamins... it's a matter of looking out for myself before anybody/ anything else. it's selfish but an evolutionarily/ naturally justifiable approach to navigating the throes of moral eating and living – mloster Aug 20 2011 at 8:58
I know what it is to be a poor college student. You are in survival mode doing the best you can do. Part of why I make the choices I make is that system needs to change and change radically because IMO no one should have to make the choice to eat toxic food or meat from sick animals simply because of money. No one. It just shouldn't exist. Knowing what I know now I just physically could not eat CAFO meat. I would be physically sick from it. So in a way I can't afford NOT to eat pastured products. No judgment on anyone else. Just trying to change the world in my own little way, lol. – Shari Bambino Aug 20 2011 at 15:13

There are several things I will never eat again- even if I crave these things, I'll resist all too easily if I get any closer to them. They range from bread to chocolates, pizza to mashed potatoes. As for fizzy drinks (coca cola, pepsi etc), I'm completely over them and don't feel a craving for them at all. I guess that one is history for sure.

what's wrong with mashed potatoes ? – DudleyP Aug 17 2011 at 8:54

Any gluten. I still miss pizza sometimes, but it's not worth the bloody diarrhea (TMI?)

I still do cheat with candy on occasion. Need to stop that tout suite.

Corn Flakes, the thing made up for avoiding constipation and mastrubation.

Cereal. I was going to include marshmallow creme but I decided not to.

Cereal. Me too. Cereal with milk always made me feel bilious before I started eating paleo, but I used it as breakfast from time to time because I thought it was "good" for me. Blech! So glad to think I never have to go there again. – Doris Aug 17 2011 at 12:20
Yes...the cereal certainly brings on the bloat for me and leaves that coating on your tongue. – BaconHealsChic Aug 17 2011 at 12:38

Pink slime burgers from any fast food chain and bread

Bread - ate some a couple weeks ago hoping I would be ok, but felt like crap for the next 3-4 days. Never again.

I had the same issue recently when I was out in town and my dear boyfriend bought me a mojito.. At first I was excited and considered it my 'cheat' .. but then next 2 -3 days I was in a fog and sickly feeling from all the sugar! – Fonda Aug 17 2011 at 9:51
Yeah, it was not fun. My wife was craving some fast food (she's only paleo when I cook dinner at night) so I figured I'd cheat and get a sandwich. Not doing that again. – Paxenos Aug 17 2011 at 11:13

Sodas for sure. I stopped drinking soda a few years before I started paleo and don't miss it. The only specific food that comes to mind is Kraft mac and cheese. I still make it sometimes for my teenager and it smells so nasty to me now. That's not to see I'd never have mac and cheese ever again. If the urge hit I'd probably have it, but I'd make sure to use good quality, real ingredients. It would also be a once in a blue moon type thing. I have no desire to go back to where processed flour led me.

Ramen. Piles of refined carb, wheat, O6 oils, MSG and "flavorings." Ewwwww

Mac & Cheese and cereal. During late night study sessions, I'd sometimes CRAVE them to the point that I occasionally gave in. Yet, the second I tasted the artificial cardboard flavor of it, I knew they were not worth it. Plus, I felt sick for at least a day or two afterwards. It's amazing how our bodies know when something is bad for them!

Frosted mini wheats and raisin bran.

But never say never. I would eat them if I was starving. And if I was starving I wouldn't be worried about blood glucose.

Anything with vegetable oil - my mom's pie crust which she proudly makes with Crisco - traditional peanutbutter because of the hydrogenated oil - donuts - store bought chips - fast food - compressed meats made to look like a "loin" or something.

I dont have any problem eatingg a piece of bread lile once a month. Im from northern nj where we have some of the best pizza in the country so a slice every other month is still in the equation. I will NEVER eat cereal again. .

Cereal - I used to eat it religiously thinking it was so bloody good for me - what a drone!

Garlic bread - I love homemade garlic bread, but it's a very slipperly slope for me (call it a gateway food) one piece and I'm sure that I would eat the whole darn loaf!

Welll.... this is just me.. but.. I never really ever say never to anything and prefer the "selected indulgence" route should a need arise.

Maybe it's because I grew up in a house where all the cooking was done by the whole family, store treats were rare, so instead of namebrand treats I had homemade pie, cookies, cake, brownies - we made them on Saturday for the rest of the week. I've never had a Twinkie. My mum made pizza in a jellyroll pan so thin square pizza always tastes better. Our town was small, we didn't have fast food joints or anything, so homemade was always better tasting for me. I just never had it and never really wanted it when I could.

Unless there is a serious health reason to not eat something I'm going to keep my usual eating path and let my body decide what it wants. I'm comfortable taking a bite of something and just chucking the rest :) or offering to others.

For reals though, if someone offered me an RC Cola in a big glass filled with crushed ice and a straw? I will drink it all while grinning even knowing that I'll probably feel like hell afterwards. Blame my grammie - she used to slip it to me when when we played cards. Behived sweetest lady in the world :)

Cotton candy because I never liked it anyway. And it has the weirdest texture.

Doughnuts. This is more because of my egg intolerance than the wheat/sugar/hydrogenated oils, but I haven't eaten one in years, and I don't really intend to. Same with cake.
