I have rediscovered my love of salmon and wanted to know the recommendation of how much to eat. Before being on Paleo, I was told by a personal trainer that twice a week should be max. Let me know. Oh, I only eat wild-caught sockeye salmon.
1-2 lbs is a good range. At the upper range it's like you're getting a bit more than 3g of long-chain omega-3 per day, which seems like a pretty good dose. More is possibly pushing it with regards to polyunsaturated shenanigans, although higher fish intake in populations tends to look favorable so that's just my speculation.
Did this personal trainer list a reason for that? If it is the mercury, salmon has little mercury and much of it doesn't get absorbed due to the selenium chelating it and preventing absorption.
I've never heard of a limit for salmon intake. I have heard to have it AT LEAST twice a week not no more than. I eat it twice a week, 1-2 lbs. Like Kamal I know of no reason to limit wild caught salmon intake.
I'm going to eat salmon for five out of the next seven days. Without a fish oil supplement, it puts me at a roughly 1:1 omega 6-3 ratio. But that isn't enough to keep in this salmon-fest. Plus, it's super expensive. This is more an effort to get used to eating a lot of fish, I guess.
Overall...I don't see a reason to limit salmon based on physical aspects of the food itself. People who live by the water eat fish pretty much every day.
Currently i eat local salmon about 4 Lb a week, its in season and not for long, so i am really enjoying it! Fish cooks so fast so that i can prepare it for breakfast anytime i want, and i think its superiour in nutrition compared to beef. Often i eat fish everyday. I am kind of bored of beef etc...
I have been eating 4-6 ounce wildcaught sockeye salmon steaks about 2-4 times per week for about a year. Not necessarily every week, I'll get bored and eat cod, talapia, or local fish, but for the most part salmon has been a staple. I've made drastic changes in my diet and with my exercise, but still during that time my cholesterol went from 264 with my ratios all out of whack, to 157 with everything perfect. Not sure how much I should be eating but that along with everything else worked for me.
I've heard one large serving of salmon steak is enough for omega 3 requirements for the week. But I do about twice a week usually no more (form of baked salmon steak and sushi). Also eating excessively puts you at risk to PCB and mercury contamination inherent in salmon (though straight black tea can cut down 80% of absorbtion, as well as selenium in brazil nuts and cilantro). So my weekly diet gos something like non consecutive 2 days fish, 2 days poultry, 2 days meat, one day junk food cheat day, vegetarian or whatever. Too much of anything can be bad so my philosophy is in variety.
