I am about 3 weeks into a Paleo-ish diet that I've been placed on ( very willingly) by my naturopath. I have researched and dabbled with Paleo in the past, but this is the first time I've actually made the plunge. I have been having some undiagnosed health issues and we're hoping this diet helps.
Currently I'm doing no grain, no starchy veggies (so no potatoes, sweet potato, beet, carrot, etc), no fruit and no sugar/sweetener. I can do raw and high fat dairy (though I'm considering taking this one out). ( as an side note: I'm supposed to keep my carbs at less than 45g, protein at less than 50g and get the balance of my calories from fat....)
My dilemma is that I'd really like something dessert like. Does anyone have ideas about something that might hit the spot, but not have sweetener? I know that cream has a natural sweetness to it, as does coconut milk... I'm wondering how an ice cream or pudding sans sweetener would taste. Has anyone tried? Any ideas are welcome.
You can whip your own heavy whipping cream and put a dash of cinnamon on top. Tastes pretty sweet to me.
If you mix some shredded coconut and coconut milk and add a tiny bit of salt to it, it'll taste pretty sweet too.
If you buy some super dark chocolate (Lindt 85%), it's pretty low carb. You can put some of those shavings on top of the whipped heavy cream too.
As you adjust you'll stop craving sweets soon :).
Can you do nuts? I have all sorts of associations with nuts and sweets due to candy bars. Almond butter on celery might work - crunchy, nutty, sort of sweet. Also, full-fat yogurt, the kind that has cream on top. My favorite brand for this is Seven Stars, usually available at health/naturalfoods shops.
My go-to's are cappuccino with heavy cream, a shot of whisky or scotch, or a pat of butter. I like to just nibble on butter like others eat cheese. :) None of these are particularly sweet, but they somehow quench my sweet tooth. Also, don't forget super dark 72% and greater dark chocolates or nibs. They contain very low sugar and can give you some sweet relief in small doses.
I did try freezing some heavy cream in a bowl last weekend. It gets kinda crystally and VERY hard. But if you have an ice cream maker, I don't see why you can't make ice cream without sugar. Frozen heavy cream tastes really good!!
Vanilla and cinnamon seem to give the illusion of sugar. If/when you decide you can work fruits in again- bananas are super handy in this respect. Are you having cravings for sweets? If so, consider taking bitters or eating a bitter salad before meals.
Pre heat oven to 180 C. Grease smallish baking dish.(to fit 4-6 eggs + tin of coconut milk) Have larger baking dish/pan for Bain maree. Blend/wisk eggs till fluffy, add coconut milk and Blend for a min or two. Pour into small baking tin. Top with nutmeg. Bake for 30min or until no longer runny. This is my desperate time number one.
Another vote for 85% chocolate here. Well, unless chocolate triggers your "FEEEEEEEEED ME CHOCOLATE YOU PALEO FREAK" monster. Ahem, but I wouldn't know anything about that (nor do I allow myself to buy the large bar anymore).
I've been eyeing this recipe for coconut vanilla icecream for a while now. It looks great! -->http://paleodietlifestyle.com/paleo-coconut-vanilla-ice-cream/
