My interest in supplementation was stimulated by my recent reading of "Primal Body Primal Mind". I know what Gedgaudas has to say on the subject, but I'm interested to see what the Hackers think. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Aug 17 2011 at 23:59

Zinc and copper are very very important to get right - if supplementing, it's important to take a ratio of 10:1 zinc:copper, however it is possible to have an existing imbalance which may be made worse by supplementation. For example, I have pyroluria (which is a controversial diagnosis in orthodox medical circles) - this leeches B6 and zinc from my system, which royally screws up my immune system and my neurotransmitters amongst other things. It has resulted in not only a deficiency in those areas but also a massive copper overload which has its own problems. Copper has been able to build up because zinc is a copper antagonist.

So, my advice is that this particular balance has been personally very important for me to monitor. There are theories that many people (who don't have pyroluria) have a copper overload because of copper water pipes not being maintained properly (but not all places use copper pipes).

My advice if you're wanting answers that fit you is to see a good orthmolecular physician or an ND or osteo who knows how to do the right testing - probably a combination of hair mineral testing, blood and urine testing.

just found out about pyroluria (it seems overly ignored) and am getting tested for it. – patrick3000 Sep 10 2011 at 20:33

Here's a chart showing the synergy and antagonism of some minerals

either i'm not smart enough to understand that chart, or it's a way to make things look visually cool without really elucidating anything... jury's out... – delete me Aug 18 2011 at 1:36
Red arrows pointing at another mineral mean it can inhibit them, green arrows mean they promote better absorption of that mineral. – cliff Aug 18 2011 at 2:09
Weird, weird chart lay out. I get it but I don't... – No more. Sep 10 2011 at 21:41

But that's not about ratios. Yes, ratios are important but in general, given sufficient amounts of all, the body will regulate as needed. There is so much complex interplay in all of biochem but some basics: Ca:Mg, Se:Hg, Na:K, Zn:Cu K/D/A etc etc The ones we generally don't get enough of are ime Mg and K (potassium). It's not tough to get sufficient iodine and selenium with sufficient seafood and plant consumption though some may need to supplement if they're been deficient for a long time and are fighting thyroid dysfunction. – Katherine Sep 10 2011 at 22:13

+1 I also suffer from Pyroluria. It's definitely worth testing for if you have health issues and your symptoms seem to match the condition.

Once you get your supplements right with Pyroluria and your body has had time to adjust, you become a normal functioning person again.

I blog about life with Pyroluria at: http://pyrolurialife.com
