Zinc and copper are very very important to get right - if supplementing, it's important to take a ratio of 10:1 zinc:copper, however it is possible to have an existing imbalance which may be made worse by supplementation. For example, I have pyroluria (which is a controversial diagnosis in orthodox medical circles) - this leeches B6 and zinc from my system, which royally screws up my immune system and my neurotransmitters amongst other things. It has resulted in not only a deficiency in those areas but also a massive copper overload which has its own problems. Copper has been able to build up because zinc is a copper antagonist. So, my advice is that this particular balance has been personally very important for me to monitor. There are theories that many people (who don't have pyroluria) have a copper overload because of copper water pipes not being maintained properly (but not all places use copper pipes). My advice if you're wanting answers that fit you is to see a good orthmolecular physician or an ND or osteo who knows how to do the right testing - probably a combination of hair mineral testing, blood and urine testing. |

+1 I also suffer from Pyroluria. It's definitely worth testing for if you have health issues and your symptoms seem to match the condition. Once you get your supplements right with Pyroluria and your body has had time to adjust, you become a normal functioning person again. I blog about life with Pyroluria at: http://pyrolurialife.com |
