I have been eating Paleo for the past two months and I just can’t seem to make much of a dent in the fat around my mid-section and I really need help. After the first month I saw some reduction, but now at the end of the second month there has been no change since. Outside of the occasional frozen yogurt cheat on the weekend, I am pretty strict. The refined carbohydrate and no sugar at all have not really been an issue except for that. I eat plenty of good fats, protein and vegetables, and based on what I have read here, really try to limit the amount of fruits and nuts I consume. Over the past two months, I have been doing CrossFit three times a week with light cardio or yoga mixed in hoping that would be enough to move things along. I am not overweight, and am building muscle in my chest, arms and core, but the fat won’t go away. The only thing I can think of is possible the protein shakes (http://www.ndsnutrition.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=52). I drink with water almost daily, and occasionally 2 times a day (1 or twice a week) to make up for the protein I can’t seem to cover in whole foods. There is only about 5 grams of sugar in it, but I am wondering if taking that in consistently is throwing everything off. Maybe I am not as strict as I think?

unlike most folks that have commented, i don't think it's a cortisol problem. i actually think you're on the right track! you've noted in a reply to a commentor that you've lost fat in other areas, just not the belly (yet). well, this fat loss means you're doing something right. very often, the belly or the love handles are simply the last to go. i think you'll get there, and what you're experiencing is just a natural rate & progression of fat loss, not a hormonal issue with cortisol.

Less is more! Sleep more, find ways to eliminate stress. If you are doing long metcons or cardio STOP. Robb Wolf talks about this in many, many, many of his podcasts!!!

Not too long. Tabata sprints mostly and short runs. – dubpluris Aug 19 2011 at 19:37

Stubborn belly fat is pretty common. Could be cortisol. If you haven't, head over to leangains.com and read up on stubborn fat, intermittent fasting, etc.

Your body is telling that what you are doing is not working, so shake it up. Cut way back on working out for a while, make sure to get a lot of quality sleep and reduce stress (working out causes stress too). Try some IF. Experiment and see what works, there is no one size fits all in this, everyone responds differently.

Overtraining and not enough sleep is the likely culprit. Crossfit three days a wee PLUS cardio? Way too much! Especially if the Crossfit you're doing is mainsite-like with long chippers. Think heavy and fast, or heavy and slow with lots of rest. Long metcon workouts will stimulate cortosol and the belly fat will not come off.

Have you tried tracking your intake in Fitday? It's easy to underestimate what you are really taking in. Also, are you losing weight, but it's just not coming off in that particular area? I find for myself that I tend to lose in other areas first and the belly and hips are last to go. I didn't notice if you said you are male or female, but I think for guys the stomach is last to go.

I have been loosing weight in other areas but the belly is definitely stubborn. I am a 27 year old male. I have used Fitday, but only to ensure I am getting enough protein for muscle gain. – dubpluris Aug 19 2011 at 19:36
Like I said, it doesn't melt off evenly all over. The belly fat will eventually go though, it's just going to be last. – turkeytyme Aug 20 2011 at 4:41

dubpluris I could have wrote that post, sounds just like what I'm experiencing, except you do more on the days off from Crossfit than I do and I've been on paleo for almost a year.

i am with the rest of you. i did have some success with Dr K's leptin reset protocol which took an inch off in 10 days. i may give that another try just to see if the results are replicated.

Just ask the girls at the MDA thread. Some of them are now 12 weeks in. They are a case study for how leptin Rx works. – The Quilt Aug 19 2011 at 20:10

its really still too early yet, I think if you are in fat burning mode you will see it start to slowly melt off after 3 months+ and yes, very very slowly!

Remember not to over train and get plenty of sleep, and yes, I recommend tracking your food intake to be sure you are hitting the right %'s....

so,

sleep

ketosis

tracking to ensure right %'s

dont over train

I have the same problem. I am quite lean though, I only weigh 70kg, however I have some stubborn fat around my stomach & lower back. Every where else I am pretty toned. It is annoying, but I have had it for about 6 years. I used to be about 20kg over weight, so I am not sure if that makes it harder to lose the last bit, however I have seen other people lose weight and get ripped. I have tried different things, higher carb, low carb, IF etc and it doesnt seem to go. I believe cortisol will lead to a bit of stomach fat in guys. Do you have a stressful job (I do)?

I know that its annoying, but if you are fit and you eat right I think that's more important. I guess it depends how much it gets to you. I have pretty much come to accept it.

I have an extremely stressful job, but I will soon be leaving to do something less stressful so hopefully that will help. Growing up, I was overweight so maybe that has something to do with it? It bothers me a good amount simply because I work so hard to get in shape and this doesn't seem to want to change. – dubpluris Aug 19 2011 at 21:22
