I know there are differing opinions on using a whey protein powder, but I have had no real issues with it. However, upon a closer look at the label or my protein powder, the ingredients were definitely a shock and I know I should be using this stuff.

All the other clean proteins I've found all mix very thinly though (using BlueBonnet whey isolate now). Can anyone recommend a brand that mixes up more thickly but is still clean? I like to use it in protein shakes as a snack and like a thicker shake!

ON whey's double chocolate is semi clean.

For thickness you just have to use less liquid. I only add water and if I want it thicker I just add less.

Go to True Nutrition:

http://www.truenutrition.com/p-1126-custom-mix.aspx

Here you can make your own custom protein blend and you can even use your favorite commercial blends that our out there for reference, but here you can opt to not add the sweeteners and crap (ALL the blends out there including Primal fuel, progenex, blue bonet list one or more of these ingredients..fructose, sucralose, sucrose ect....or my favorite 'natural flavors' Google it and find some good articles on what this could get you.)

The trade off is the flavor isn't that great but I see it this way; if you want a milk shake after you workout or for a meal replacement then go get a milkshake and stop fooling yourself, if you want something that taste good and is good for you eat a steak, eggs or some real food. If I want to go the liquid fuel route then it's just that... fuel not flavor. 2 scoops in a small shaker bottle with water and drink it down. It doesn't taste good but you won't gag on it either and you will have piece of mind that you aren't getting the additives you don't want. You don't cut corners at the gym so why do it at nutrition, sure it feels better to drink something that 'taste sweet and chocolaty' just like it feels better to do 1/4 squats in the smith machine instead of a heavy 3 x5 out of the squat rack to full depth, it may not be fun while its happening but you will feel much better after its done...

True Nutrition is great, because you can also get Grass Fed Whey isolate. It helps with the flavor and the mixability if you add 10% maltodextrin. The peanut butter, chocolate fudge, and strawberry are all great tasting. Especially with coconut milk! – Christina yesterday

I really like MRMs all natural whey. Its vanilla or chocolate. I have a coupon code from Iherb.com you can use if you want, it's cheapest at that site.

Thanks! I'd love that coupon code if you don't mind sending it over to me! – Chuck Feerless Aug 20 2011 at 16:58
I'd be interested in that coupon code as well, if your willing. – Stu Aug 20 2011 at 17:02
I use MRM and Jarrow. Both hormone free and natural sweeteners. – TigerJ Aug 20 2011 at 17:11

Bluebonnet 100% Natural Whey Protein Isolate is probably the cleanest protein you can get.

Only two ingredients: Undenatured whey protein isolate, natural vanilla flavor.

Thanks! As I mentioned though, that's what I'm already using and it just mixes into a thin shake. Good stuff though! – Chuck Feerless Aug 20 2011 at 16:57
that's very odd. i've always thought it mixed really thick. that's one of the things i like about it best actually, that's it's got a really creamy flavor. – Jack Kronk Aug 20 2011 at 17:28

With any protein isolate, you are introducing the excitotoxin free glutamic acid into your body. Just eat more meat!!

Mark Sisson's Primal Fuel and similar products are probably about as clean as you will get. http://primalblueprint.com/categories/Store/Supplements/

Clean but expensive – Stu Aug 20 2011 at 16:56
It has Stevia in it. – Travis Isaacs Aug 21 2011 at 10:38

Sun Warrior is pretty clean and free of additives and artificial nonsense. Get the Vanilla flavour, the unflavoured one is pretty bitter.

NOW Foods Whey is 100% whey isolate. No soy, sugar, or artificial sweeteners. It's great with coconut water.

huh? What about this? Ingredients: Calcium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Microfiltered Whey Protein Isolate (milk) (providing ß-lactoglobulin, a-lactalbumin, Immunoglobulins and Glycomacro Peptides) and Soy Lecithin (<1%). Contains no sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, egg or preservatives. – Jack Kronk Jan 11 2012 at 17:21

Liked Sissons primal fuel but a months supply ended up costing 100 bucks there has to be one as good for less.

The other really GOOD thing about Bluebonnet is that it's 100% grass-fed sourced. Most of the ones that mix up really, really thick do so because thickeners (like guar gum, etc.) have been added. If you want a thicker shake, use the same amount of powder, 1/2 the water, and 1/2 ice -- that will give a thicker, more milk-shake like texture.

I also like http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/goat_milk_whey_powder.htm and http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Goatein&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=12663387654436661754&sa=X&ei=tcUNT5-wL4GesQKUxZyNBg&ved=0CHQQ8wIwAA. Both of these are goat-whey protein, and are from grass-fed animals. Again, they don't have thickeners, so they won't be milkshake thick--but using the 1/2 water and 1/2 ice option gives a thicker shake.

The other thing that works for me is using 2 oz heavy cream, 2 oz water, and 1/2 cup crushed ice.

I use a vegetable based protein powder made by Vitacost. Whey is dairy hence NOT PALEO!

Vegetable based protein powder made from rice or peas is not paleo either. Bioavailability of these plant proteins is substantially lower than whey. I bet plant proteins cause more digestive distress as well. – coffeesnob Apr 9 at 2:11
Whey protein has a very low amount of lactose in it, and if it is grass fed, at least it is good quality. – Christina yesterday

Vitacost is made with peas and rice, no?

Hemp is another great Protein (and Fiber) source not mentioned that is Paleo-OK. Rich in BCAA's!

I am new to this site and found this exchange to be interesting. My bias is for the least processed, whole-est food possible. Therefore I'd probably shy away from protein powders.

But we now have this new expensive vitamix blender (talk about PROCESSED!) and I thought I'd just crack a raw egg into the greens/veggies/fruit whatever combo we do. Would this be considered a protein drink, if it's just one or two eggs?

If you want something thicker I would definately reccomend casin - not sure if you'd personally consider that paleo though.

I actually really like SUN WARRIOR WARRIOR BLEND protein powder. It's not whey, it's pea and cranberry protein!

I use phd diet whey protein which has been good and had good ingredients and i am starting next week using red-55 pre-mixed shakes ! I wouldn't listen to people who tell you not to use protein shakes! Do what feels right for you!

Don't use protein shakes! :-P Hehe, seriously though - they are a completely supplemental, highly processed food product. I don't recommend them, because it's quite easy to get enough protein on a real, whole food diet. However, you're right: if they work for you, that's a fairly good reason to use them. – greymouser yesterday
