If I eat anything below 70%cocoa chocolate, even if I only eat 1-2 squares [10-15gram] I get an almost instantaneous hot flush, my forehead gets moist - not fun.

anyone else have this? if so, do you react similarly to any other foods? which ones? tnx

I react similarly to too much vinegar. – gilliebean Nov 4 2011 at 15:14

Chocolate is very high in biogenic amines: Tyramine (TYR) and Phenylethylamine (PEA). These amines can cause headaches, skin redness and hot flushes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biogenic_amine

Vinegar: very high in histamine, just another biogenic amine.

This reference leads to a webpage of a woman who suffered for many years and had to find out in the end, that she has food intolerances when it comes to biogenic amines: http://biogenicaminewoman.tumblr.com/biogenicamines

I get the same thing and haven't spoken to anyone else who gets it. It's hard to explain but it feels like a cold flush to my cheeks and it only happens when I eat chocolate.

I get the same thing whenever I eat something high in Salicylates.

Yes! Me! With Chocolate and only chocolate. I can feel the heat rising to my face moments after I have a mouthful of the delicious stuff. It doesn't last more than a second or two, and it doesn't hurt. I have never found anyone else who has had this happen.

I had something similar happen to me with a sweet potato, I think it was a big spike in blood sugar.....it was miserable for sure!!

If I eat dark chocolate on an empty stomach I don't feel well afterwards, did you have something in your system? Again, it might be a rush of caffeine that's too much for your system at once or sugar...

my 'gut' reaction tells me it's not caffeine as I drink milk coffee no sugar or sweeteners and get no reaction. tnx for responding, Kelly. hope others will too... – sz Aug 21 2011 at 16:48

Oxalates?? Both sweet potatoe and chocolate are high in them. – ROB Sep 4 2011 at 14:48
Black chocolate isn't that high in sugar. 10g has half tsp – majkinetor Oct 30 2011 at 19:41

I get hot flushes - Both of my cheeks go pink and my whole face feels clammy after eating white potatoes - Mashed, baked or boiled. When I eat chips (french fries), which is once in a blue moon, I am fine. I think it's the starch level/sugars in the potato which causes this reaction. I don't really eat chocolate and when I do its 85%+. Do you find that you experience hot flushes from any other types of food?

I get it after bananas, white potatoes or anything high in sugar.

My face goes cold after eating a large quantity (about 50 grams) of chocolate, mainly chocolate on its own and not a chocolate bar with other ingredients.
