I know that we get most of our paleo knowledge from the web(and here we are!) and books.
If paleo is really going viral and spreading like a good meme should, there will someday be a glossy mag for it.
If there was a glossy monthly paleo mag, what should it contain for both the established paleostyle people and for people interested in trying it out???
Who would advertise?
Update to the question... Now that there are some paleo magazines out there... What do you think of them???
I think some articles on how your body actually processes food would be great, you know, to show people the real effects that wheat & such has on your body.
Also be interesting to have evolutionary articles in there, from anthropology & evolutionary psychology, that could focus on how traits & behaviors from our ancestors developed, and how they continue to be with us today. But written in a very approachable "Psychology Today" sort of way.
Yes, absolutely, recipes.
Yes, absolutely, stories of people going through it, not only before and after, but how great to have a monthly column for those going through the transition. Or highlighting different experiences, such as the whole no 'poo thing.
Paleo personal care products (this seems to be a hot one for us ladies). Paleo make-up, body products, etc.
Highlighting paleo options in different cities (restaurants, grocery stores for paleo food, paleo activities, etc)
I think this is a great topic, and an idea that I have thought & wondered about. If anyone wants to give this a go, let me know, I'd love to be involved!
I imagine - vibram five fingers
organic mail order
grass fed/pastured farms
whole foods/trader joes etc
probably many many more
Why bother with print?
A print magazine has large start up costs, high overhead and... it's not a website.
I can't remember the last time I bought any type of magazine or newspapers. All my hobbies and interests have dedicated websites and with smart-phones, tablet computers and e-readers becoming more popular all the time I just can't see why you would even get started with a glossy magazine.
In my opinion it's much better to start a paleo / primal magazine type website, it's cheaper, will reach more people around the world and with a little bit of internet marketing know how you'll make a much healthier profit.
@Adam Crafter (and everyone else)
Check out my new favorite magazine: Meatpaper.
Meatpaper is a print magazine of art and ideas about meat. We like metaphors more than marinating tips. We are your journal of meat culture.
Not Paleo per se -- but close enough for now.
I would love to see pictures of people's daily meals because I'm always interested in what other paleo's eat and perhaps the meals will inspire me to make something different!
Oh and I love reading about the health benefits of different foods...
Resource links, etc are also nice so we can all go on the web sites and scope out the products, etc for ourselves and perhaps order them if we are intrigued!
I would like to see...
...stories on tweaking your Paleo Diet for maximum effectiveness in weight loss and fitness.
...interviews with the bigger names in the field plus food writers (i.e. Pollan, Schlosser) and evolutionary dieticians/food historians.
...recipes, naturally, but also solid articles on cooking technique that makes it easier for those less "kitchen inclined" to utilize that stove thing.
...more on activities that aren't "Primal," per se, but still utilize the body and make for good exercise (i.e. martial arts, Parkour, caber tossing).
...solid reviews of items that keep popping up, i.e. "we gave VFF to these four people and they vowed to wear them faithfully for one month. results?"
...a monthly series where a registered dietician with no previous exposure to the Paleo Diet tried it for a month and then gave his/her honest assessment from personal experience.
@ waywardsister With your connections you should try and get something going. A magazine like this i think would sell like hot cakes. As a sales rep i know that you would easily get advertisers with how the health and workout industry is right now, which is on fire.
Also for begginers, a how to guide to starting the Paleo diet as well as a what you can and cannot eat and a list of foods that are kind of in the middle would be great.
I would like see in this magazine is what certain acronyms mean...like VFF. (five fingers)
For example: (EVCO-extra virgin coconut oil), (HFCS-high fructose corn syrup)....I read about all this stuff and then there is something I missed. You know, educate the public.
I would subscribe to this magazine. I think its all very interesting and it would be nice to have something to read at night and the computer off!
