Good or bad?

Personally, I love it. – sherpamelissa Aug 24 2011 at 19:59

Well... I like it. Dagoba is good, too, as is Valhrona, and Mast. I keep to about 70% and higher cacao for my choco treats.. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Aug 24 2011 at 20:08
why not 90%? 99% is also available tho I have never tasted it and its much thinner... – CR Aug 24 2011 at 21:27

90% has higher carbs and less fiber, so for those doing low-carb, 85% is less glycemic. – Namby Pamby Aug 24 2011 at 21:56

I once tasted 100%. It was awful. Tasted like sand or ash. – Antti Oct 1 2011 at 18:07

If you're not metabolically deranged or a sugar binger, the occasional 85% isn't going to hurt you. But if you're trying to lose weight, or you are a binger, or you really want to retrain your palate to not just take sweet for granted, eat 100%.

After my fitfth chocolate (even 99%) in 2 days I decided I am a binger. – Primordial Oct 1 2011 at 14:19

I like the 70% version and it did not interfere with my weight loss at all... That few grams of sugar can't do much to my body (when I am otherwise low carb). So I wouldn't worry about that - provided one doesn't overeat on it, of course. – greyman Oct 2 2011 at 7:21

I eat the Lindt 85% and I think it's great--it's more cost effective than the others too in my area. They also have a 90% that I can only find at Walgreens. Green & Black's and Endangered Species are also good.

My Walmart (and all that I know of in the DFW area) have the 90%, which is my favorite. – GHarkness Aug 24 2011 at 20:39

I've never liked the Lindt 70% or 85%, finding the Ghirardelli 86% far, far superior in taste and smoothness. However, the Lindt 90% has more complex flavor without being bitter, and I really love it. – TommyJ Aug 24 2011 at 21:11

I was shocked to see Ghiradelli dark chocolate 72% at the movie theatre last week. Better that than the junior mints and whoppers! – BaconHealsChic Aug 24 2011 at 21:28

its OK.....but 99% is better.

indeed......... – sage_ Aug 24 2011 at 23:22
@Quilt, if you like the Lindt 99% - you must try the Pralus 100%.. – Resurgent Aug 25 2011 at 3:58
I live in Switzerland and I've never seen the Lindt 99%... now why is that? :( – gydle Dec 3 2011 at 14:13
^ They're only available at Lindt Stores... I'm going to one in two weeks to pick me up a few bars :-))))))))))) – Phazo Dec 3 2011 at 18:22
problem with the Lindt 99% is that the bar is half the size (half the thickness) at a higher cost. I'd rather go with a 100% Ghirardelli baking bar, and eat small portions of it. – raydawg Dec 3 2011 at 23:08

I try to avoid the Lindt, since it isn't Fair Trade certified and most chocolate that isn't is a) contributing to deforestation in tropical climates. 2) a large percentage of non FT chocolate, particularly that coming out of the Ivory Coast, is produced using child labor, in particular child slave labor. (I'm not dicking around with you, there's a wikipedia article on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_in_cocoa_production) I'm just not down with slavery.

Around here at least the Black and Green brand is comparable in price to the Lindt and has the official FT seal.

While I think your phrase, "I'm not dicking around with you" is hilarious I would politely submit you are incorrect and should do more research before bashing a company. Lindt's chocolate comes from Ghana not the Ivory Coast--where child slave labour is prevalent. – BaconHealsChic Aug 24 2011 at 21:22
Yeah slavery in Africa is really bad. There are twice as many slaves held in Africa (by other Africans) then there was in pre-civil war United States. (there are actually more slaves in the world today then at any other time in human history. Most are in asia and africa) notforsalecampaign.org – Geoff Aug 25 2011 at 3:06
BaconHeals, I don't particularly trust the claims of companies, and it doesn't diminish the detriment to the environment caused by traditional cocoa farming. I'd rather be safe than sorry, but that's just me. – LenaHyena Sep 4 2011 at 15:48

It's very good. Green & Black along with Chocolove are the best imo.

I LOVE Green & Black 85%! Not very often, but so good when I get it – Erin Aug 25 2011 at 12:19

Try Taza Chocolate's new organic 87% bar. Caveat -- all of Taza chocolate bars have a more gritty mouth feel due to traditional stone grinding method of production -- so don't expect melt in your mouth smooth. I've been eating raw nibs but am switching back to roasted. I haven't seen any evidence that chocolate or cocao were ever consumed "raw" traditionally. If the cultures who brought the world chocolate didn't eat it raw, there must be a good reason. I used to eat Scharfenberger's roasted nibs but switched to raw Navitas because of raw hype and the fact they are organic. I see that Taza now has slow roasted plain nibs (before they only had the chocolate covered nibs) so I'm going to try them because they are organic. Re: Lindt: A customer service rep indicated that the cocoa and 90% bar use dutch/process cocoa -- this destroys the antioxidants. Green and Black's 85% tastes great but is so sweet - makes me really question the accuracy of the sugar/carb count.

+1 for the TAZA - my absolute favorite chocolate. And I LOVE the texture. – JCB Aug 25 2011 at 14:10
If it's done with traditional stone grinding then maybe you get some good minerals with it, depending on the stone... – gydle Dec 3 2011 at 14:15
I love Taza. It's minimally processed, and they also sell cocoa nibs. Also as a bonus, it's actually gluten-free, whereas Lindt and Chocolove have enough gluten (from shared equipment) to give me a reaction. – Sara S. Mar 2 2012 at 0:45
I love the Taza chocolate as well, and I actually really enjoy the texture. Plus, it seems rich enough to me that I only have to eat a triangle and I'm satisfied. Other chocolates make me want to eat and eat and eat them. – Brooke Mar 2 2012 at 3:38

Good, so very, very good.....which probably means it is a little bit bad.

Lindt has soy and I try to stay away from that. I agree with the others above about fair-trade certified as I tend to support anything that is. I am a fan of Alter-Eco Blackout bar. It's 85%, FTC, organic, soy free and tastes amazing!!!!!!

The 90% Lindt has no soy. – Kikilula Oct 1 2011 at 18:39
Some of the milk chocolates from Lindt now have barley malt powder. Wanted to buy it for the kiddies as they love chocolate too, but they don't eat dark, so I went with another brand. – raydawg Dec 3 2011 at 23:16
recently discovered the Alter-Eco blackout and I'm a convert. Lindt is quite good, but I like this one better. – tremendo Mar 2 2012 at 5:09

I eat 2-3 squares of Lindt 90% everyday and I love it... it's the smoothest, darkest chocolate experience ever! 90%>85% in terms of taste and value.

Good, very good.

I love Lindt. Lately I've been eating organic raw cacao beans. I guess they would be 100% dark. They're super bitter, but I'm getting used to them. They're certainly not as tasty as the Lindt bars, though.

people people people - try and find yourself a bar of Pralus 100% (definately online, or i buy from whole foods in UK). this is the closest you will come to angels sitting on your tongue and melting into liquid gold. trust me.

you bastard.... – majkinetor Oct 1 2011 at 18:36

SweetRiot makes a new 85% organic and fair-trade bar that is very low in sugar (4g) and smooth as silk. It's my favorite.

I eat 50 - 80 g almost each day while still loosing weight.

I used to eat Lindt and Chocolove dark chocolate, but they both have enough gluten in them to cause me a reaction. Lindt dark chocolate is made on shared equipment, and Chocolove must have cross-contamination in their vanilla powder, as it's the only suspicious ingredient and their website says they don't have any chocolates that contain gluten outright.

Now I eat Taza and Endangered Species dark chocolates. The Taza is especially wonderful because it's less processed. I've really grown to love it, and I crave chocolate less when I eat it.

If I get chocolate I house the whole thing. I have no self control. I therefore avoid it as much as possible.

I don't think it should be a daily part of your diet but if you don't have issues it's probably not that bad.

I had to quit chocolate bars. I would suffer a really bad mood after eating them. Certain brands were worse than others, but all would affect me to some extent. Life without chocolate is not too bad for me but definitely better for those around me.

One of the benefits to eating "paleo" is that you can easily add or remove foods and quickly ascertain whether or not they adversely affect you. When I was on the SAD I would have never been able to correlate my moods with certain foods.

Most chocolate bars have soy lecithin in it which some people have an allergy to. Trader Joes sells some soy lecithin free bars – Geoff Aug 25 2011 at 3:09
It's really hard to find bars that don't contain soy lecithin. – Brooke Mar 2 2012 at 3:39

Theobroma makes amazing chocolate...for the connoisseur! Dark chocolate is one of the richest sources of magnesium and antioxidants per gram! More than grapes and wine! I'll never give it up.

Trader Joe's has some good fair-trade dark chocolate as well... I think the stuff I bought last time had about 85% cacao solids? We eat it regularly, in small quantities. It's just about the only sweet I go for these days. I also like the Endangered Species and Green & Black's chocolate.

I think it's decent, but nowhere near as good as Valrhona Le Noir Extra Amer, which is the best dark chocolate bar I've ever had.

for anyone in the UK, Tesco 85% chocolate is currently reduced to 53p/100g

Which ever chocolate you eat, I would say check the sugar on the label. I find Swiss chocolate to be much sweeter than others. I like Traders Joe's 85% which has 6 grams of sugar per 40 gram serving (2/3 of the bar). Since I only eat one or two squares a couple of times a week, the sugar is minimal. The cacao is from Colombia. TJs 72% is from Belgium and has 13 grams of sugar for a 47g serving (1 bar).

+1 on all TJ's dark chocolate. The 85% is crazy, as is the 70something% with almonds. – HA Apr 13 2012 at 22:31
I recently tried the TJ's 85%...sweet Jeebus, now I'm hooked. – Kation Apr 14 2012 at 4:19

I like Vintage Plantations 90% and 100%. They are both soy lecithin free and fair traded. You can get it on their website or at worldwide chocolate in IL.

The West African child slavery reality is all too real and startingly similar to the trade 200 years ago. You def wanna get fair traded chocolate!

It makes me smile how much passion and response chocolate receives on this board.

I am totally loving the TJ's dark chocolate, way more than some of the others. Also the scharffen berger are nice. I do not love the extra dark Chocolove, though I like some of their more semisweet products. I also like the Davao by Askinosie.

Love endangered species 88% with blueberries! Lindts 90 too! Anything over 83 is for me. Frozen also makes it taste better for some reason.

Personally I've had to fight a lot of sweets cravings, but I have always seen dark chocolate as a rare treat. The darker the better. Lindt does have a 99% if you can find it. However, a number of paleo eaters avoid soy, for various reasons. If you need / want to do so, check to make sure the chocolate you eat doesn't contain soy lecithin. This usually means organic, higher-quality chocolates are your best option.

Lindt seems fair but Ghiradelli can have other contaminants including wheat.

Scharffen Berger Extra Dark 82% is quite good. The flavor is nice and complex and has much better flavor than any of the Lindt bars I have tried.

If you are budget minded then buying the Ghiradelli 70% Bittersweet Dark Chocolate Baking Bar on the baking aisle is a great value. I can currently get a 4oz bar for 2.49

If you are trying to avoid sugar the Ghiradelli 100% Chocolate baking bar is the same price.
