I have noticed lately that whenever I shower more often or wash my face more than usual my skin looks like complete crap. It becomes red, itchy, bumpy, irritated and overall dull. I spent a week without showering when I moved out to the country and noticed that my skin tone looked way better, and the small red bumps on my face were slowly disappearing despite the fact that my pores were extremely clogged. Could I have an allergic reaction to something in the water. If so how should I approach this? I could stop washing with water but that would leave my face looking dirty despite the improved symptoms.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the additives in municipal water like chlorine and fluoride. They have water filters you can get for your shower if you want to see if that helps. Have you tried washing your face with filtered water from a Brita or something like that? You can also do oil cleaning of your face, kind of how women use it to remove make-up, but you'd just be removing dirt. Grab some coconut or olive oil, rub it all over your face, and then wipe clean with a tissue. |

What's the temperature and duration of your washing like? It could be that your country showers weren't as luxurious as your normal ones. Overly hot water strips the skin of its protective oils and can often be quite irritating as well. Equally, prolonged exposure to hot and steamy environments (contrary to conventional beauty wisdom) actually clogs pores by making the sticky sebum coated skin flakes in your pores swollen and even stickier. Personally my skin often feels tight and itchy after a long hot shower and I sometimes get those red bumps you described after using steam rooms. |

You could be over-washing. Washing your skin too much isn't good for it as you need some of your skins natural oils to protect you. Also, what's in your bath products? I have to be very careful about what I put on my skin due to an allergy to sulfates, and they're in EVERYTHING. |

I need more information. Are you using any cleanser/soap/shave lotion/aftershave on your face at all or just water? Do you wash with a splash, wash cloth or what? Is your skin oily or dry or both? And...do you have any allergies to any foods. Also, do you eat dairy? |

I live in the north east of England and have also lived in London and visited Sheffield with my ex many times. My skin was ok in Washington & Newcastle where I'm from, ok in London and now in Stockton on Tees. However, when I used to go to Sheffield, I broke out and I almost felt like my skin was burning. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I definitely think it was something in the quality of the water. Most of the UK is non-flouridated, so it's certainly not flouride in the water that was the issue in my case. Perhaps it's a naturally occuring mineral in the water that's causing the issue? Are you able to look at your water company's website to see what the water quality is like in your vicinity? |

I have rosacea and use bottled distilled water along with the California Baby line to wash and moisturize....good luck! My skin is really sensitive, too.....use room temperature water and pat dry...no rubbing! Wait 5-10 minutes and then moisturize.. |

Not saying i have a solution but am having similar issues with my skin, scalp and hair. I have tried nearly everything including using natural shampoos and conditioners. I tried benzoyl peroxide shampoo, acne treatments, clobex spray, ketocanazol shampoo and not shampooing at all Not using soap at all. and nothing worked. Some t hings even made the situation worse. I have lived all over in Michigan, Colorado Springs and Houston suburbs. never had this problem until i moved to two cities in IL: Rantoul, IL and Champaign, IL. My scalp burns, is red and irritated and scaly. The skin on my face gets super dry to the point that lotions dont even help. I would go away for weekends to Michigan and my skin would appear to improve but it would only be for a weekend so i couldnt confirm that the improvement was due to different water. I am now going on day 7 of a 10 day vacation away from Champaign and my scalp feels 100% better. My skin is not scaly or red or itchy and only my natural dandruff is present. I am now 100% sure that I am having a reaction to the city water. I don't have a solution for you but just letting you know that others have similar problems with all the chemicals that cities put in their water. I also saw a dermatologist during the last year who immediately assumed it was some sort of bacteria thus the clobex and ketocanozol. Good luck. |

Wait, I just read one of your comments saying that you've had this condition for your whole life. If this is not a recent thing then you are clearly experiencing something unrelated to your move to the country. You should have said this has been a lifelong issue in your original post. Go to a doctor or stay out of the water. It is very rare but possible to be allergic to water. Also very possible to be allergic to water additives. Sorry to be blunt but, you should have gotten this looked at a long time ago. |
