I've noticed that even when I get the RDA of my B-vitamins via food, by the end of the day I'm in a really crappy mood. Irritated, aggressive, snappy--some days I think I could rip the head off of a bunny and drink its blood.

But these past couple of days I've noticed that when I take a B-Complex (B-100 to be specific) with my lunch, I don't experience the heavy mood swings during the latter half of the day. I actually feel like I'm on an even keel, aka "normal".

Can anyone explain this? If I'm getting enough B-vitamins from diet, why does a supplement have such a noticeably positive effect on my mood?

First off, ripping the head off a bunny and drinking its blood is pretty damn Paleo. Assuming of course that the bunny doesn't get you first (see picture below).

Second, digestive issues might explain why the supplemental b-complex seems to help even you out while food sourced vit-b does not.

Another possibility is that you might have been deficient in a particular b-vitamin whose requirement is now satisfied by taking a broad spectrum supplement.

I asked my friend (a biochemist) about it, and she said there had been studies done which showed that depression can be caused by low folate. I think I'll try just taking folate by itself and see if my good mood persists. "What, behind the rabbit? It IS the rabbit!" LOL – Nemesis Aug 26 2011 at 1:12
Cool :) I hope that the folate addresses the whole rabbit issue! – FED at LiveCaveman.com Aug 26 2011 at 1:16

The RDA is based one what exactly? The amount of nutrients required for good health.... its kind of a laughing matter IMO.

Maybe you need more, try getting more B-Vitamins via food. Or maybe you absorb the Vitamins better then the food, or maybe your not absorbing what your consuming.

Its not so much a matter of how much you put in as it is a batter of how much your body absorbs.

You may not be eating enough red meat or offal. I used to take B-Complex pre-Paleo to help with mood and did notice a difference. Now that I eat a lot of red meat taking a B-Complex doesnt have any effect

I eat lots of red meat, actually, I've had organic beef burgers for dinner two nights in a row, plus 3 eggs a day, bacon, greens, carrots, nuts, etc. The only thing I have a hard time getting 100% is Folate, but I usually get around 65%. Having livers for dinner has no discernible effect on my mood the following day :/ – Nemesis Aug 25 2011 at 1:45
