I'm three weeks paleo as of today and seeing lots of improvements like fitting into a too tight skirt and not wheezing on an awful humid day like today. I even think my hair is getting thicker! But the weirdest thing is my lips look fuller and are more red. I noticed it but then my husband commented too. I thought that this might be one of the reasons people look younger in their "after" shots? Maybe good fats plump the skin including lips?

(If this is a real thing due to paleo someone should alert Hollywood so that people would quit destroying their faces with implants!)

I've been told that my lips are quite nice. Also, my eyelashes go on for days. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Aug 25 2011 at 0:59

where are you in your cycle? – Katherine Aug 25 2011 at 1:06
Katherine, just ovulated so it's not that. My skin has been very good & glowy but I also started washing my face with honey (crunchy betty's challenge) so wasn't sure if that was paleo or my new skin care regime. – tovesworld Aug 25 2011 at 3:14
I've also noticed changes in my skin. I have a "pinkish hue" (as George Castanza said) more often in my face since going paleo. Katherine, curious about the relationship between your cycle and your skin, can you elaborate just a little? – Stephy Aug 25 2011 at 15:37
Which variety of paleo specifically are you eating? – Travis Culp Aug 25 2011 at 18:24

I'm 3 months in and I'm having the same experience as you. I've actually mistakenly thought that I had already put on my minimal make-up several times recently (when I had not!) It's not just my lips, it's my whole face and the difference is fairly dramatic. My lashes & brows are slightly darker, my skin is clearing and taking on a creamy glow, and my lips are a deeper pink. A completely unexpected and VERY welcome side effect!

What do you eat? I'm about three months in and actually looked a lot better my first month! – Celine Mar 2 2012 at 21:48

Probably the best benefit of eating lots of good quality fats is the glow and anti-aging! I definitely look younger now than I did when I was vegan 2 years ago! While vegan I suffered from horrible, flaking dry skin, eczema, rashes, cracking lips and a 30 pound weight gain in just one year.

I don't know about actually getting plumper, but I used to have very light lips, which I hear is a sign of adrenal fatigue. Since quitting the SAD, my lips are much redder and seem to be better defined. I've wondered if they're actually bigger, but I generally just write it off as simply being more noticeable.

Just ditto-ing this. My lips did get darker/redder, they were quite pale before. – waywardsister Aug 25 2011 at 13:02

Now that's very interesting! My lips were much lighter and my mom said that just happens as you get older (I'm 42) but now I wonder if it's one of those things that doesn't HAVE to happen and is a sign of poor health. – tovesworld Aug 25 2011 at 13:03
tovesworld- I read about that on The Healthy Home Economist. She said "I have a friend who once told me that after about age 30, a woman’s lips disappear into the back of her head! This was a colorful way of saying that lipstick was mandatory after a certain age. I don’t agree! Lips that have no color whatsoever is not an age thing – it is a sign of weak adrenals. " There's a little more under Pale Lips on this post: thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/2010/09/… – WordVixen Aug 25 2011 at 18:35

My nieces told me after I lost about 25 lbs, that I looked 10 years younger. Recently, after about 35 lbs loss and a very slim body, they told me I was at least 15 years younger and asked me where my butt went!! (it usually arrived in the room before I did).

So I don't know about fuller lips or better hair, I'll happily take the 15 years younger!!

Sometimes when I've lost weight people react like I'm sick and get all 'worried', not this time!!!

Yay! That is great. – BaconHealsChic Aug 25 2011 at 14:10
Its funny you say that, I had a guy at my office tell me that I was "too skinny" after losing about 30 lbs and getting leaner. Only in America (specifically San Antonio) would someone mistake true health and wellness for being "too skinny" – McMeghann Aug 25 2011 at 16:26
It is one of the niftiest things about the before/afters. On Paleo people look younger; on vegan diets they tend to look older. (Gross generalization I know; individual responses may vary!) – tovesworld Aug 25 2011 at 23:41
