My Vitamin D levels were tested 7,7 ng/ml, so I went to a physician and said I needed a prescription for Vitamin D. He said my levels were not really high and prescribed me 20.000 IU.

How long it is best to take it before doing another blood test to check the levels? I was advised to take one pill per week. I am dark skinned and don't get much vitamin D from the sun.

I don't know what you should do. At 7.7 I would take 10,000 IU a day with fat and test in two months. – Don Aug 25 2011 at 13:36

Why did you need a prescription for Vitamin D? I ask because it's my understanding that doctors generally prescribe D2, when D3 is less expensive and OTC, and many D advocates prefer D3. – Rose Aug 25 2011 at 13:45

I've got D3 prescribed. Here in Germany most seem to know that D3 is better. Over 5.000 IU or so you need a prescription. – Primordial Aug 25 2011 at 14:01

I would retest in 3-4 months. And see if you can't get some actual sun. There is evidence that sunshine has extra benefit. – Dave S. Aug 25 2011 at 14:44

7.7 ng/ml is a super-low level. Personally, I aim for 50-80 ng/ml.

I would definitely take 10,000 IUs daily for at least 3 months & then retest.

If IEs=IUs, then 20,000 a week is not going to be enough.

sorry, misspelling. Yes, 20.000 IU. Than I'll just use 20.000 every other day. for a few months. – Primordial Aug 25 2011 at 15:53
Perfect! Glad you discovered this sooner, rather than later... – Dragonfly Aug 25 2011 at 16:51
Oh, absolutely. And that was because I insisted to to a blood test, which I had to pay for myself. No health insurance here. – Primordial Aug 26 2011 at 5:54

My wife's vit D level was 7 also. She was prescribed 50,000IU pills of D2 to take twice a week. They told her to come back in 12 weeks. She's also taking 5000IU of D3 several times a week that the doctor doesn't know about. Her platlettes also were slightly elevated.

I heard from a reliable source that vit D levels this low could point to something very sinister...it may mean there is inflammation or a serious underlying condition that is 'using up' all the vit D in the body. Wife has appt with oncologist today, hopefully they will order up some really good labs to get to the bottom of this.

Also, if your vit D is way low, good chance you have bone issues as your body can't absorb calcium w/o vit D. Make sure you take the vit D with a fat such as coconut oil or after a meal w/plenty of fat.

note his vit d level is about a 20 in americano units. – Don Aug 25 2011 at 17:49
No it isn't; it's 7.7ng/mL here or there. – Travis Culp Aug 25 2011 at 18:06
Your right. That is low – Don Aug 25 2011 at 19:09
lol. Yeah, it's low. Akman, thanks for your answer, very insightful. My inflammation marker (CRP) is low (0,1) but you might be right. Especially because I enjoyed months of sun exposure before having this low level. – Primordial Aug 26 2011 at 5:59

So the wife goes to the oncologist today who is also a hemotologist and he checks her platlettes. Finds the are still high, just maybe 10% above the range. Says it's worrisome and wants to recheck her in 90 days. Says if it's still high he wants to do a bone marrow biopsy. Also says her super-low vit D level is completely unrelated. He didn't order any labs. I think he's a quack and we need a new dr.
